DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men’s wrestling team dropped an ACC match toVirginia, falling 31-7, on Sunday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.The Cavaliers took eight of 10 bouts, with two coming by fall, toimprove to 5-6 on the season, 2-2 in the ACC. The Blue Devils fall to3-11-1, 0-3 in the league.
Virginia got on the board first when 125-pounder Steve Garland, rankedsixth nationally, defeated Tommy Hoang (Cushing, Okla.), 10-5. Dukethen took a 4-3 lead when Sean Meakim (Downingtown, Pa.) scored a majordecision over Toby MacDonald, 11-3, at 133.
The Cavaliers then took the six matches to secure the team victory. At149, UVa’s John Pozniak pinned Andy Soliman (Prosser, Wash.) at 5:56.The Cavaliers got another fall from 165-pounder Brian Muir, who pinnedMike Mitchell (Midwest City, Okla.) in 3:26. The Blue Devils stayedclose in two matches, as 157-pounder Deuce Harris (Durham, N.C.) tookDon Carlo-Clauss to overtime before losing 7-5 in overtime. At 174,Matt Hoover (Swedesboro, N.J.) kept it tight, battling to a 1-0 loss tothe Cavs’ Steve Mazzola.v Duke’s other victory came at 197, where Daegan Smith (Washington, D.C.)held off Jimi Massey for an 11-7 win.
The Blue Devils return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 23, when they hostN.C. State at 7:30 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium. It is the finalmatch of the regular season.
