RALEIGH, N.C. — NC State won the first six matches, one of themby fall, and wound up winning eight of the 10 matches overall enroute toa lopsided 27-9 ACC wrestling victory over Virginia on Sunday at ReynoldsColiseum.
NC State improved to 10-4 overall and further strengthened itsstranglehold on first place in the conference standingsNC State is now4-0 in conference action, and is the only school in the conference with awinning league record. Virginia fell to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in theconference.
Freshman Scott Garren got the match rolling for the Wolfpack witha 4-3 win over Don Carlo-Clauss at 157 pounds. Joel Dramis then defeatedBrian Muir 9-4 at 165, and Kevin Boross followed by pinning Steve Mazzolaat the 1:16 mark in the 174-pound bout. That gave NC State a 12-0 lead,and Zach Breitenbach made it 15-0 with a 4-0 shutout of Ryan McGrath at184.
Jason Gore kept the streak alive by beating Jimi Massey 3-1 at197, but Virginia’s Josh Etu got the Cavaliers on the board with an 8-3win over Ngozi Collins at heavyweight. Virginia’s Steve Garland, rankedNo. 6 at 126 pounds, defeated NC State’s George Cintron by medicaldefault, a six-point victory in the team scoring that cut the NC Statelead to nine points at 18-9.
The Cavaliers did not record another victory, however. LeeCarroll defeated Toby MacDonald 4-1 at 133. Oraefo Brown scored late inthe 141-pound match to tie the score at 7-7 and force overtime, where hewent on to defeat P.J. Bory 9-7. That clinched the team victory for NCState, and Tommy Davis put the icing on the cake with a 9-7 win on adouble-overtime tiebreaker over John Pozniak.
