UVa Men’s Basketball Standout Earns ACC Rookie Of The Week Honor

CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia freshman Travis Watson has earned Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week honors for his play in Virginia’s recent victories over Clemson University (Feb. 15) and the University of North Carolina (Feb. 20).

Watson, a 6-7 center/forward from Brookneal, Va., scored 27 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the two games. He was 11-18 (61.1 percent) from the field and 5-9 (55.6 percent) from the free throw line. He also had two steals, one blocked shot and five turnovers in 59 minutes of action in the two games.

In Virginia’s 76-62 victory at home over Clemson, Watson scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds. He was 3-6 (50.0 percent) from the field and 3-6 (50.0 percent) from the free throw line. He also had one blocked shot, one steal and two turnovers in 30 minutes of playing time.

In UVa’s 90-76 win at North Carolina, Watson scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. He was 8-12 (66.7 percent) from the field and 2-3 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line. He also had one steal and three turnovers in 29 minutes of action. The victory was Virginia’s first in Chapel Hill since 1981.

Watson is currently averaging 11.5 points and 8.3 rebounds a game for the Cavaliers, and is shooting 54.3 percent (120-221) from the field. It’s the second time this season Watson has earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors.

Virginia is currently 18-8 overall and 8-5 in the ACC. UVa’s next game is at Florida State on Saturday (Feb. 26).
