CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The ninth-ranked Virginia men’s swimming and diving team turned in several outstanding performances in winning four of fivepreliminary events Friday at the 2000 Men’s ACC Swimming and DivingChampionship at Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the campus of the Universityof North Carolina. Leading 10 UVa swimmers who have qualified for finalsis second-year Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Burke), who posted a school record timeof 52.60 seconds in the 100 breaststroke.
Moses set school, conference and ACC Meet records in posting the fastestcollegiate time in the 100 breast this season (52.60). The formerconference and ACC Meet records were held by Brendon Dedekind of FloridaState. The conference record was 53.16 and the ACC Meet record was 53.24prior to Moses’ performance in today’s prelims. Moses’ personal careerbest entering the ACC Championships was a UVa record 53.21.
The Cavaliers posted the top two preliminary times in the 400 individualmedley and the 200 freestyle. Fourth-year Doak Finch (Southern Pines,N.C./O’Neal), who is bidding to become the 14th four-time ACC champion inthe same event, cleared the first hurdle by qualifying for the finals ofthe 400 individual medley. Finch won the prelims with a season-best timeof 3:50.81, while first-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown)placed second with a personal-best time of 3:52.96. In the 200 freestyle,third-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) and fourth-year AustinRamirez (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield) took the top two spots withpersonal-best times of 1:37.55 and 1:37.65, respectively.
Virginia also claimed three of the top four spots in the 100 butterfly withfourth-year Jared Felker (Yarmouth, Maine/Mercersburg Academy) winning theprelims. Felker touched in a career-best time of 48.52, one one-hundredthof a second ahead of N.C. State’s Walter Magnusson. UVa second-year MattLee (Munster, Ind./Munster) and first-year Evan Taylor (Issaquah,Wash./Issaquah) were third and fourth with PRs as well. Lee clocked a timeof 48.64, while Taylor finished in 48.83.
First-year Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside), fresh off hisvictory in the 200 IM, finished second in the prelims of the 100 backstrokewith a time of 49.30 seconds. In addition to Moses, first-year JonathanBaird (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) qualified for the finalsof the 100 breast with a personal-best time of 55.79.

After the six finals held Thursday evening, defending champion Virginialeads the ACC Championship with 242 points, while host North Carolina issecond with 201.5 points.
