CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball teamreturned to home action on Saturday to host the Bucknell Bison in aseven-inning doubleheader at the UVa Baseball Field this afternoon. Thedoubleheader is part of a three-game weekend series between Virginia andBucknell. Both teams were searching for their first victory of the seasonas UVa entered the game with a record of 0-6-1 overall. Bucknell wasplaying in its season opener and entered the contest with a mark of 0-0.Virginia would be the team that came out on top this afternoon though, asthe Cavaliers posted a 6-1 victory in game one before rallying in theirfinal at-bat to claim a 5-4 comeback win in the second game.
In the first game of the afternoon, all Virginia would need was alittle bit of offensive punch to couple with the outstanding pitchingperformance turned in by RHP Kevin Shrout. Shrout threw a one-hitter afterfacing 25 Bison batters and limited Bucknell to just one run the entirecontest. He threw a complete game (seven innings) and struckout ninebatters on the afternoon.
The Cavaliers were able to supply Shrout with some scoring on theoffensive side of play to help UVa record its first win of the 2000 season.Ryan Kalamaya (1-3) gave Virginia an early 2-0 lead when he singled tocenter field to score Tim LaVigne (1-2) and Luis Giraldo (2-2, two RBI).After Bucknell posted its lone run of the game in the top of the fourthinning, the Cavaliers would add another run of their own in the fourthinning when Giraldo singled to center field to score Ben Himes (1-2, twoRBI), making it a 3-1 Virginia lead.
The Cavaliers scored two more runs in the fifth inning and extendedits lead to 5-1 after Himes hit a two-run RBI single to right field thatscored Robbie Marvin (1-3) and Michael Floyd (1-4). UVa added an insurancerun in the sixth inning to make the score 6-1 when David Stone (1-4) hit anRBI single to right field to score Giraldo. Behind Shrout’s pitching andthe six UVa runs scored, the Cavaliers would hold on for a 6-1 victory,claiming their first victory of the season.
In game two, Bucknell scored four runs (one in the first inning,three in the second inning) in the first two innings and led Virginia 4-2after two innings of play. The Bison would hold that lead until the bottomon the seventh inning. There, UVa scored three consecutive runs to pullout a dramatic 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Bison.
The final inning began to take form when Stone walked in Virginia’sfirst at-bat. After a Bucknell pitching change (Farmery for Stetina),Marvin followed with a single to right-center field, advancing Stone tosecond base. Pinch-hitter Eric Christensen was hit by a pitch in the nextat-bat before Jon Benick (3-4, three RBI) hit a two-run RBI double down theright field line that scored Stone and Marvin. After Himes wasintentionally walked and LaVigne fouled out to first base, Hunter Wyant(2-3, RBI, run) hit an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Christensen to giveUVa a 5-4 victory in its last at-bat.
With the two victories on the afternoon, the Cavaliers improvetheir record to 2-6-1 overall, while the loss drops Bisons record to 0-2 onthe season. Virginia and Bucknell will return to action Sunday, February27th when the two teams meet in the final game of the three-game seriesbeginning at 1:00 p.m. The contest will be played the the UVa Baseballfield.
