FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Virginia softball team dropped both ends of adoubleheader to Arkansas, 7-1 and 2-0, Friday night in the first day ofcompetition at the Morning News Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. Withthe two losses, the Cavaliers fall to 1-8 on the season, while Arkansasimproves to 7-9.
Virginia lost to the Lady Razorbacks 7-1 in the first game. Leading 2-0entering the top of the fourth inning, Arkansas scored four runs to breakopen the game. The Cavaliers avoided the shutout by scoring a run in thebottom of the sixth. Third-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury,Mass./Shrewsbury) scored the lone UVa run on a failed pickoff attempt.
Young collected one of the ‘Hoos four hits with a triple to lead off thebottom of the first. Second-year Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./LaCosta Canyon) took the loss in her first pitching appearance of the season.She allowed all seven runs, four of which were earned, in four innings ofwork. Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) pitched well inrelief of Dennis as she allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings.
Arkansas’ Tammy Kincaid improved to 4-4 on the season with the win. Sheallowed only four hits and one unearned run.
In the second game, the Lady Razorbacks broke a scoreless tie with two runsin the bottom of the fifth to earn a 2-0 victory. Jennifer Bottoms threw atwo-hit shutout in earning the victory for Arkansas. Fourth-year ChrissyQuinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) pitched well in defeat for theCavaliers. Quinn (0-4) gave up two earned runs on six hits and struck fourwhile walking one.
Bottoms held Virginia hitless through six innings, but first-year catcherStephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel) broke up theno-hitter with an infield single. Dennis kept the rally going with asingle to right field. Fourth-year first baseman Amy Peay (Mechanicsville,Va./Atlee) then sacrificed the runners over to second and third. With twoouts and the tying run at second base, first-year shortstop Ruby Rojas(Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) flied out to right to end the game.
