FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Virginia softball team split a pair of games withMissouri Saturday in the second day of the play in the Morning NewsInvitational in Fayetteville, Ark. The Cavaliers lost the first game 5-3,but bounced back with a 7-6 triumph in the second game. UVa is now 2-9 onthe season, while the Tigers fall to 9-5.
Virginia gained a split in the doubleheader with Missouri, who is ranked29th in the nation, by scoring all seven runs over the final three inningsin a 7-6 victory. The Cavaliers trailed 4-0, but erupted for five runs inthe bottom of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. After the Tigers tied thegame at 5-5 with a run in the top of the sixth, UVa took the lead for goodwith a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Fourth-year center fielder Corinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) provided theoffensive spark by driving in four of the ‘Hoos seven runs in the game.She hit a two-run single in the fourth and then added a two-run double tocenter in the sixth. First-year shortstop Ruby Rojas (Santa An,Calif./Mater Dei) and fourth-year Jen Krill (Huntington Beach,Calif./Huntington) both had RBI singles in the fourth. First-year catcherStephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel) added an RBIfielder’s choice groundout to plate the Cavaliers’ fifth run in the fourthinning.
Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) picked upher first win of the year on the mound. She allowed six runs, but onlythree earned, and struck out seven batters while walking three. Good,Rojas and fourth-year second baseman Amy Peay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee)had two hits apiece. Ingrid Werner took the loss for Missouri.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Missouri defeated Virginia 5-3. TheTigers scored three runs in the third and added two more in the bottom ofthe fifth. UVa scored a single run in the top of the fifth and then addedtwo more in the top of the sixth to close within 5-3.
Missouri’s Stephanie Falk threw a three-hitter in improving her record to3-2 on the season. She struck out six and walked three. Fourth-yearStacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) was saddled with the loss for UVa andfell to 1-4 on the year. Zagol gave up four earned runs and struck out twowhile walking three.
First-year catcher Britton Gore (Vienna, Va./James Madison) scored theCavaliers’ first run of the game in the fifth on a Missouri throwing error.Rojas scored on another Tiger throwing error in the seventh and then Peayscored on an RBI groundout by Krill.
Gore, Rojas and fourth-year third baseman Karen Breshears (Camarillo,Calif./Cornerstone Christian) registered UVa’s hits in the first game.
Virginia closes out play in the Morning News Invitational with an 11:00a.m. doubleheader against Notre Dame on Sunday.
