CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – Schuye LaRue scored 18 points and TelishaQuarles added 17 as No. 16 Virginia held off Wake Forest 77-71 on Sunday.
The Cavaliers (22-7, 13-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 35-23 at halftimeand stretched the lead to 16 points on a basket by Elena Kravchenko with justover 10 minutes to play.
But Wake Forest (7-20, 3-13) began chipping away at Virginia’s lead, pullingwithin six points on a 3-pointer by Brenda Kirkpatrick with 4:23 left. That wasas close as Wake Forest would get until the end, when Alisha Mosley scored with1.7 seconds left.
Mosley finished with a game-high 21 points. Kirkpatrick added 12 and KristenShaffer had 14.
LaRue, who scored 10 of her points in the second half, also had 11 rebounds.Renee Robinson added 12 points for Virginia, and Svetlana Volnaya had 11.
