FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Virginia softball team dropped both ends of adoubleheader to Notre Dame 1-0 and 6-1 in the third and final day ofcompetition at the Morning News Invitational Sunday in Fayetteville, Ark.With the two losses, the Cavaliers now stand at 2-11 on the season andfinish 1-5 in the tournament. The Fighting Irish improve to 7-4 on theyear.
In the first game, Notre Dame lefty Jennifer Sharron threw a two-hitter ina 1-0 Irish victory. Sharron (4-1) struck out eight and did not walk abatter. Notre Dame scored the game’s lone run in the top of the seventh ona Virginia throwing error by second-year pitcher Kristen Dennis (Encinitas,Calif./La Costa Canyon). Dennis (0-2) pitched well in defeat as she gaveup five hits and struck out five while walking two.
Third-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) hit adouble and first-year shortstop Ruby Rojas (Santa An, Calif./Mater Dei)added a single to account for the Cavaliers’ two hits.
In the second game, the Fighting Irish scored a pair of runs in the bottomof the second and added three more runs in the third to break the gameopen. Trailing 6-0, the ‘Hoos scored their lone run of the game in the topof the fifth. First-year catcher Stephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley,Calif./Mount Miguel) led off the inning with a double. First-year KatieWeinberg (Reston, Va./South Lakes) pinch ran for Calhoun and advanced tothird on a sacrifice by fourth-year second baseman Amy Peay(Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee). Weinberg scored on a groundout by fourth-yearleft fielder Jen Krill (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington).
Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) took theloss as she falls to 1-5 on the year. Quinn gave up five runs, three ofwhich were earned, on five hits in three innings of work. She struck outthree and walked one. Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga)pitched the final three innings and allowed one run on three hits andstruck out one batter.
Melanie Alkire earned the win for the Fighting Irish by pitching fivestrong innings. She gave up two hits and one run while striking out fiveand walking one. Sharron pitched the final two innings and held UVahitless.
Virginia returns to action Friday-Sunday, March 3-5 when its hostsDelaware, Eastern Kentucky, Ohio and Wright State in the Cavalier Classic.UVa opens the tournament against Delaware on Friday at 11:00 a.m. and thenplays Ohio at 1:00 p.m.
