WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary’s baseball team recorded its sixthstraight win here today, knocking off in-state rival Virginia 9-3 atPlumeri Park. The Tribe got home runs from Brian Rogers (Plains, Pa.)and Mike O’Kelly (Midlothian, Va.) among their 13 hits that helpedpropel them to victory.
Virginia (3-7-1) drew first blood in the contest, coming up with a runin the top of the first inning. After the leadoff hitter struck out,Hunter Wyant was hit by a Robert Jones (Portsmouth, Va.) pitch. Afteranother strike out, Tim LaVigne was also hit by Jones. Luis Giraldo thensingled, bringing home the first run of the game.
O’Kelly tied the game with his fourth homer of the year in the secondbefore the Tribe took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. TreyWakefield (Dallas, Texas) led off with a double and then came home on aone-out double by Chris Clarke (McLean, Va.) to put the College up 2-1.
William & Mary (10-2) broke the game open in the third, takingadvantage of three Virginia errors to score three unearned runs. Aninfield single by Rick Stephenson (Chesapeake, Va.) and a sacrifice flyby Michael Brown (Richmond, Va.) brought home two of the runs. The Tribethen put the game away with four more runs in the fifth, collecting fivehits in the frame. The first run scored on Rogers’ home run beforeJones, Wakefield and Brown came up with consecutive RBI singles later inthe inning.
Jones started for the Tribe and gave up two earned runs in sixhits in 6 1/3 innings to pick up his fourth win of the season. He struckout seven Cavaliers. Ben Shepard (Great Falls, Va.) then came on topitch the final 2 2/3, giving up just two hits.
Wakefield went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI to pace the Tribehitters. O’Kelly and Jones also had a pair of hits for the College. JonBenick had a pair of hits and an RBI to lead Virginia. Brandon Creswellwas the starter for UVA, taking the loss after giving up seven runs,four earned, in 4 1/3 innings.
