RICHMOND, Va. – The Cavaliers opened up their 25th season of play with a 12-4 defeat of in-state rival Richmond as junior Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) scored four times and added an assist to lead the Hoos in scoring. First year Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) had a hat trick in her first collegiate game and also chipped in an assist to aid the Cavaliers’ efforts.
Virginia jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Aumiller connected twice in the first thirteen minutes of play. Richmond controlled the first three draws but the vaunted Virginia defense demonstrated their prowess, holding the Spiders off the board for the first 14:31 as Frances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) made seven saves in the first half to thwart the Richmond attack.
Aumiller’s first goal came as a result of captain Ashley Widger’s (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) caused turnover and ground ball pickup. Widger started a fast break that resulted in Aumiller’s goal on a run to the cage at the 22:51 mark. Haas made the score 2-0 three minutes later as she stuck back a save of a Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) shot. Aumiller then converted a Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) feed inside the eight to give the Hoos a 3-0 lead.
Richmond got on the board as Jessie Popham ran through the arc at the 15:29 mark. But the Cavaliers answered right back as Mills Hook (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) ran a fast break off a Haas draw control to score just six seconds later. Haas rolled the crease for the fifth goal at 12:25 to put Virginia up 5-1 before Carrie Aitken scored for the Spiders. Cangemi rocketed a shot to the upper right corner of the cage off a feed from Aumiller to put Virginia up 6-2, but the Spiders cut the deficit to 6-3 at half as Katie Dolan converted a free position in which Segarra was outside the arc with just 1:59 before the break.
Just 1:03 into the second half Richmond converted a free position as Kristy Gallagher’s goal made the score 6-4, but that would be all the scoring the Spiders would get on the day.
Four minutes later Aumiller converted her own free position. Lauri Kenis (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) caused a turnover and got the ground ball and outletted the ball to Haas who streaked in from midfield to put the Hoos up by four again just 1:28 later.
Seniors Kelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) and Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) hooked up for the next goal as Fromal fed Allenbach on the crease who quicksticked it into the cage with 8:22 to play for a 9-4 lead. Haas scored her fourth goal off a feed from Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) at the 5:18 mark to push the Hoos into double digits. At this point, Mary Beth LaVerghetta (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) came in for the Cavaliers, replacing Segarra who ended with eight saves.
On the ensuing draw, Sambus got the control and raced off down field, scoring just nine seconds later to give Virginia an 11-2 lead. She also scored the final goal of the game with just 34 ticks on the clock as she converted another feed from Fromal.
With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 1-0 while Richmond drops to 0-1. Virginia will take on #16 Syracuse on Saturday, March 4 at 11:30. The game will be played in Klockner Stadium.
