FAIRFAX, Va. – Virginia sophomore Michael Floyd placeda base hit just inside the right-field line in the top of the ninthinning to lift the Cavaliers to a 4-3 victory over George Mason Thursdayafternoon in a non-conference college baseball game at Raymond H. “Hap”Spuhler Field.
Virginia improved to 4-7-1 with the victory, while the Patriots,playing their first home game of the season, dropped to 2-7.
Freshman Ben Himes started the Cavalier rally in the ninth by drawing awalk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Mark Rueffertand moved to third on a passed ball. After a strikeout, Floyd (2-4)lofted his hit to right to bring home what proved to be the winning run.
George Mason had tied the score at 3-3 with two runs in the bottom ofthe eighth. Junior Eddie Jordan led off with a single and moved tosecond on a single by senior Mark Gibbs (2-4). Both runners advanced ona passed ball, and Jordan scored on a single by senior Greg Filson.
Gibbs then came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Derek Morrison.
Virginia took a 2-0 lead after two innings and led 3-1 after five.Junior Jon Benick (2-3, 2 RBI) blasted his second home run of the yearin the top of the first, and freshman Robert Word’s single drove home arun in the second. Morrison put George Mason on the board in the fourthwith his second home run in as many days, but the Cavaliers added a runin the fifth as Benick singled to drive in sophomore David Stone.
Senior Will Parker (2-0) picked up the win in relief, while seniorJesse Lipcius (0-1) took the loss for the Patriots. Senior Tim LaVigneearned his first save for the Cavaliers.
George Mason travels to North Carolina State for three games thisweekend. The Patriots and Wolfpack meet at 3 p.m. Friday and at 1:30p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
