CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball made a successful home-seasondebut as it won two games in the first day of competition at the 2000 UVACavalier Classic Friday at The Park. The Cavaliers opened the tournamentwith a 4-1 victory over Delaware and then defeated Ohio University 9-0.With its two wins, Virginia improves to 4-11 on the season. In the thirdgame of the day, Delaware defeated Ohio 3-2. Delaware is now 3-4, whileOhio drops to 1-6.
The Cavaliers received a pair of terrific pitching performances in theirtwo wins. Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East)picked up her second win of the season in a 4-1 triumph over Delaware inthe first game. She allowed just one run on four hits and struck out sixwhile walking two in a complete-game effort. Fourth-year Stacey Zagol(Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) was even more dominant in the next game as sheallowed just two hits in a 9-0 five-inning win over Ohio. Zagol registeredeight strikeouts and did not walk a batter in collecting her second win ofthe season.
Against Delaware, second-year first baseman Kristen Dennis (Encinitas,Calif./La Costa Canyon) drove in a pair of runs with two hits, whilesecond-year Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) added two hits,including an RBI triple. Third-year right fielder Meaghan Young(Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) also contributed a pair of safeties. KristiO’Connell took the loss for the Fightin’ Blue Hens. She gave up four runson seven hits and struck out three while walking one.
Delaware took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but UVa tied the game at 1-1in the third on McCabe’s triple that plated fourth-year left fielder JenKrill (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington). The Cavaliers broke the gameopen with three runs in the fifth inning. McCabe scored what proved to bethe game-winning run on a suicide squeeze by fourth-year center fielderCorinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata).
In the second game, Virginia scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourthinning en route to a 9-0 win over Ohio. The game was called after fiveinnings. Good, Krill and fourth-year third baseman Karen Breshears(Camarillo, Calif./Cornerstone Christian) each had two hits for the ‘Hoos.Krill also added two RBI. Kasey Dowd took the loss for Ohio. TiffanyBolton and Kelli Bankert collected the Bobcats’ two hits.
Delaware bounced back from its opening loss to defeat Ohio 3-2 in the thirdand final game Friday afternoon. Susan Dugan earned the win as she allowedtwo runs on six hits and struck out seven. With the tying run on thirdbase with no outs, Dugan got a strikeout and two groundouts to preserve hersecond victory of the season.
The 2000 UVA Classic continues on Saturday with four games. At 9:00 a.m.,Delaware plays Eastern Kentucky, followed by an 11:00 a.m. contest thatfeatures Wright State and Delaware. Eastern Kentucky plays Ohio at 1:00p.m., and Ohio and Wright State meet at 3:00 p.m. in the final game of theday. Virginia returns to action in the tournament with two games on Sunday.
