GREENSBORO, N.C. – Telisha Quarles and Svetlana Volnaya powered asecond-half run that helped No. 16 Virginia extend its dominance of Wake Forestwith a 72-47 victory in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Friday night.
Quarles finished with 16 points, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, andVolnaya added 12 points as Virginia (23-7) improved to 47-1 against the DemonDeacons, including victories in their last 45 games.
The top-seeded Cavaliers secured a berth in Sunday’s semifinals with a 13-0surge in the second half. Volnaya had a 3-pointer and an assist in the run andQuarles hit a pair of 3-pointers to help Virginia build a 23-point lead.
The Cavaliers also got 14 points and four steals from Renee Robinson and 11points from Schuye LaRue.
Wake Forest (7-21) never led on the way to losing for the 10th time in 11games. Alisha Mosley had 16 points for the Demon Deacons and LaChina Robinsonhad 10.
The Cavaliers opened the game with a 20-4 run and led by 15 after a firsthalf in which they held the Demon Deacons to 29-percent shooting.
Wake Forest put together a 9-0 surge early in the second half, capped by a3-pointer from Val Klopfer, that made it 41-31 before Volnaya and Quarlesfinished off any hopes by the Demon Deacons for an upset.
The Cavaliers pushed their lead as high as 27 in the closing minutes.
