CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After defeating Liberty 6-1 on Saturday morning,the 20th-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team posted its sixth win of theseason by shutting out 75th-ranked UNC-Greensboro 7-0 in the afternoon atthe Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliersare now 6-0 on the season, while UNC-Greensboro falls to 6-2.
The Cavaliers swept all three doubles matches to take the doubles point,and then won the six singles matches in straight-sets to post a 7-0 victory.
UVa’s No. 11 doubles tandem of third-year Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./TheLovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) didnot play together against the Spartans as Vahaly sat out the doublesportion of the match. Montgomery teamed with second-year Jason Romesburg(Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) to post an 8-5 win at #3 doubles over TannerHaddon and Bo McWhorter. Virginia’s normal #2 doubles team of fourth-yearJohn Winter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker(Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens), who are 37th in the ITA doubles rankings,beat UNC-Greensboro’s Tony Mule and Marcio Torres 8-4 at #1 doubles. TheCavalier duo of third-years Robert Abendroth (Lafayette, La./St. Stephens)and Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), who normally play #3doubles, posted an 8-6 victory over Paul Goode and Nigel Mitten at #2.
In singles action, Vahaly, the ITA’s fourth-ranked singles player, defeatedJohn Clark 6-0, 6-1 at #1. Montgomery, ranked 50th in the nation,triumphed 6-1, 6-2 over Mule at #2 singles. At #3 singles, Winter defeatedDiego Goya 6-1, 6-3. UVa’s Croker won a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 decision overMitten at #4 singles, while Hunter triumphed 6-3, 6-2 at #5 singles overGoode. Abendroth won a close 7-5, 7-6 match against Haddon at #6 singles.
Virginia concludes a busy weekend by hosting 50th-ranked Ohio State at 1:00p.m. on Sunday, March 5 at UVa’s Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
