CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Cavaliers brought their silver anniversary tour tothe Charlottesville opener to face #16 Syracuse and came away with a 16-5defeat of the Orangewomen. For the second consecutive game the Hoos had afour-goal output from an individual, with honors going to Amy Fromal(Folsom, Pa./Ridley) and Mills Hook (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s). GinaSambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added a hat trick and Stephy Samaras(Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) had seven ground balls and four caused turnoversto lead the defensive efforts. The Cavaliers allowed only 12 shots for theOrangewomen.
Virginia started quickly, scoring three times in the opening 1:53.Sambus drove to the cage at 28:54, Fromal connected on a free position at28:37, and Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown)quicksticked a MollyCangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) feed into the cage 30 seconds laterfor the fast 3-0 lead. Two minutes later Hook connected on a free positionfor a 4-0 lead. Three minutes later Fromal picked up a ground ball in frontof the Virginia cage and raced downfield, taking the ball to the cage,scoring at 23:03. Syracuse called a timeout with the score 5-0.
The Orangewomen got on the board next, winning the ensuing draw andKaren Healy ran into the eight, split a doubleteam and scored at 22:28,making the score 5-1. The teams traded opportunities for the next 14minutes until Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored on an8-meter to make the score 6-1. Syracuse answered two minutes later as Healyfound Katrina Hable on a fast break to cut the deficit to 6-2.
The Virginia offense quickly caught fire again, scoring three goalsin a 1:24 span, including a pair by Hook, to take a 9-2 lead into the half.Hook converted a free position at 5:29, Sambus took a Haas feed to the cageat 4:53, and Hook connected on a crease feed from Kelly Allenbach (WestChester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) at 4:05.
Four minutes into the second half Sambus scored again on a run tothe net to put Virginia in double digits at 10-2. Syracuse’s Hable scoredon a free position at the 19:42 mark, but again the Cavalier offense roaredto life, scoring three times in 2:08 to take a 13-3 lead. Hook scored on arun to the cage at 18:20, Fromal connected on a free position at 17:09, andJamie Haas hit an 8-meter off a fast break at 16:12 to give the Hoos a10-goal lead. Fromal scored on a free position at 13:30 to make the score14-3, but Stacey Brown stopped the Virginia run with a goal at 12:31 tomove the deficit back to 14-4. With 10:20 to play Lacey Aumiller(Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep)scored on a free position to move themargin back to 15-4.
With 8:16 to play Liz McCarthy (Watertown, N.Y./Taft) came in toreplace Frances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) in the cage.Segarra made five saves while allowing four goals in her 52 minutes ofplay. Karen Healy scored her second goal of the game as she scored on afree position following a fast break at 5:13. But the Cavaliers scored thefinal goal of the game as Cangemi scored on a drive to the cage with 1:03to play.
Samaras led the Cavaliers with seven ground balls and four causedturnovers while Fromal and Sambus both had three draw controls for theCavaliers.
Virginia, now 2-0, will play #20 Old Dominion on Wednesday, March 8in Charlottesville. Game time against the Monarchs is 4:00 pm at the UHallTurf Field. Syracuse falls in their season opener to 0-1.
