CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Ryan Powell scored his fourth goal of the game2:53 into overtime to give Syracuse a 13-12 victory over defending NCAAmen’s lacrosse champion Virginia Saturday before a crowd of 4643 atKl?ckner Stadium.
The second-ranked Orangemen (1-0) gained possession of the ballbefore Powell’s game-winning goal when the top-ranked Cavaliers (0-1) werecalled for illegal procedure for calling a timeout in their defensive end.
Midfielder Josh Coffman participated in three of Syracuse’s firstfour goals, scoring one and assisting on two others, as the Orangemen led4-0 with 1:36 left in the first quarter. For the game, Coffman scored threegoals and had two assists.
Virginia trailed 9-6 at halftime, but held Syracuse scoreless inthe third quarter while tallying four goals to take a 10-9 lead headinginto the fourth period. Three of those goals came after penalties againstthe Orange, including two by freshman midfielder A.J. Shannon whileSyracuse starting goalkeeper Rob Mulligan was on the sidelines after anunsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
The score was tied three times in the last quarter, the last timeby Virginia midfielder David Bruce with 7:02 to play. Bruce led theCavaliers with three goals.
Liam Banks and Michael Springer each had two goals for Syracuse.Powell, Coffman, and Matt Caione each had two assists. Shannon, DrewMcKnight, and Ian Shure had two goals for Virginia.
Virginia hosts Princeton on Saturday, March 11.
