CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 20th-ranked University of Virginia men’s tennisteam improved to 5-0 on the season with a 6-1 win over Liberty Saturdaymorning, March 4, at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville,Va. The Flames fall to 4-1 with the loss.
The Cavaliers started out strong as they won two doubles matches to earnthe doubles point. Virginia then won five of six singles matches for the6-1 victory.
UVa’s #2 doubles team of fourth-years Nick Acquavella (New York,N.Y./Deerfield Academy) and Jeff Dawkins (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School),defeated Anthony Fleming and Matt Scott 8-2. Second-year Jonathan Chou(Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) and first-year Peter Cownie (DesMoines, Iowa/Dowling) beat the Flames’ Shannon Walker and Austin Rowland8-1 at #3 doubles.
In singles action, second-year Jason Romesburg (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro)defeated Bruno Coelho 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (8) at #1 for the Cavaliers.Virginia’s lone singles loss came in the #2 match as Dawkins fell toRicardo Shinozaki 6-3, 6-3. First-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach,Va./Norfolk, Academy) won the #3 singles match for UVa 6-3, 6-3 over Fleming
The Cavaliers won the remaining three singles matches in two sets.Acquavella, at #4 singles, posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Scott. Chouregistered a 6-0, 6-1win over Walker at #5. Cownie defeated Josh Campbell6-0, 6-2 in the #6 singles match.
