CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball teamreturned to home action this afternoon to host the Seton Hall Pirates indoubleheader at the UVa Baseball Field. The doubleheader is part of athree-game weekend series between Virginia and Seton Hall. The Cavalierswon the first game (seven innings) by the score of 4-1, before falling tothe Pirates by the count of 8-4 in the second contest.
In the first game of the afternoon, a seven inning contest, SetonHall took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when RayNavarette hit an RBI single to left field that scored teammate ToddCrawford. However, it would be all UVa from that point on as the Cavaliersscored four unanswered runs to close out the game.
Virginia answered the Pirates third inning run with three runs ofits own. After Mark Rueffert (1-2, run) walked to begin the inning, RyanKalamaya (1-3, RBI, run) hit an RBI double to left center field that scoredRueffert to tie the game at 1-1. In UVa’s next at-bat, David Stone (1-2,RBI, run) hit an RBI single to right field to score Kalamaya, giving theCavaliers a 2-1 lead. Stone’s hit and Kalamaya’s run would eventually turnout to be game-winning marks. Hunter Wyant reached base on an error andlater scored in the inning when Tim LaVigne (1-3, RBI) hit an RBI single toleft field making it a 3-1 Virginia lead.
UVa would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inningwhen Jon Benick hit an RBI-sacrifice fly to center field that scored Stone,to make it a 4-1 Cavalier lead.
Senior pitcher Kevin Shrout gathered his second win of the seasonon the mound for Virginia when he threw a compete game victory. Shroutstruckout six batters and allowed only one run on four hits in the game.B.J. Benick took the loss for Seton Hall after giving up four runs on fivehits while striking out four batters.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Pirates jumped out toan early 2-0 lead in the first inning before UVa would answer with two runsof its own in the bottom of the inning. Stone (1-4, two runs) single andthen later scored when Benick (2-5, two RBI, run) hit a two-run homerun toright field to knot the score at 2-2. Benick’s homerun was his third ofthe season.
The Cavaliers would take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the secondinning when Wyant (2-5) hit an RBI single to left field to score Stone(1-4, two runs, RBI). However, Seton Hall would tie the game at 3-3 in thetop of the third inning when Mike Boscom reached first base on an error andeventually came around to score when Navarette hit a sacrifice fly tocenter field.
Virginia would take its final lead of the game in the bottom of thefourth inning when Kalamaya (3-4, run) singled to left field and laterscored when Stone hit into a fielder’s choice. However, Seton Hall wouldtie the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning when Adam Arslanianscored a run when Joe Scott hit into a fielder’s choice. After tying thegame at 4-4, the Pirates would go on to score four unanswered runs in thenext three innings en route to the 8-4 Seton Hall victory.
Damon Ponce De Leon was the winning pitcher for the Pirates afterlogging eight innings of work and allowing four runs on nine hits. JonMetzger was UVa’ starting pitcher and threw 4.1 innings after allowing fourruns on five hits and striking out two batters. Alexander “Shooter” Starrwas credited with the loss however, after he pitched two innings of reliefand allowed three runs on two hits with one strikeout.
With the split on the afternoon, UVa’s record moves to 5-8-1overall, while Seton Hall’s record now stands at 1-4-0 on the year.Virginia and Seton Hall will return to action Sunday, March 5th when thetwo teams meet in the final game of the three-game series beginning at 1:00p.m. The contest will be played the the UVa Baseball field.
