CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 20th-ranked Virginia men’s tennis teamregistered its third win of the weekend by defeating 50th-ranked Ohio State4-2 Sunday afternoon at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center inCharlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers are now 7-0 on the season, while OhioState falls to 6-4.
The Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches. TheCavaliers pulled out the victory by winning four singles matches.
UVa’s No. 11 doubles tandem of third-year Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./TheLovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) wasupset by Ohio State’s Andrew Carlson and Jon Scale 8-6 at #1 doubles. TheBuckeye’s Phillip Metz and Chris Porter also posted an upset victory bydefeating the No. 37 ranked tandem of fourth-year John Winter (Richmond,Va./St. Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St.Stephens) 8-4 at #2 doubles. The Cavalier duo of third-years RobertAbendroth (Lafayette, La./St. Stephens) and Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill,N.C./Chapel Hill) defeated Ohio State’s Bob Wellstein and Derek DeFalco 8-5at #3 doubles.
In singles action, Vahaly, the ITA’s fourth-ranked singles player, defeatedCarlson 6-3, 6-4 at #1, while No. 50 Montgomery triumphed 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 at#2 singles. At #3 singles, Croker fell to Metz 6-3, 7-5. Winter downedVince Na 6-1, 6-2 at #4 singles, while Abendroth recorded a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6victory at #6 singles. The #5 singles match between Hunter and DeFalco wasretired with the match knotted at one set apiece and the third set tied at2-2. DeFalco won the first set 7-6 and Hunter took the second by the same7-6 score.
Virginia returns to action on March 11-12 when it competes in the EastCoast Shootout in Norfolk, Va.
