CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball teamreturned to home action this afternoon to host the Seton Hall Pirates inthe third game of a three-game series at the UVa Baseball Field. TheCavaliers won the first game (seven innings) by the score of 4-1, beforefalling to the Pirates by the count of 8-4 in the second contest onSaturday. This afternoon, Virginia bounced right back and gathered a 7-4victory in game three.
Seton Hall recorded the first two runs of the game in the top ofthe third inning when Alfie Critelli (1-5, two RBI, run) crushed a two-runhomerun to right center field that scored teammate Ray Navarrete (2-4, RBI,run) to make it a 2-0 Pirate lead.
Virginia finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourthinning when Jon Benick (1-5, run) doubled down the right field line andthen advanced to third on an error by SHU’s Jeff Miller. Tim LaVigne (1-2,RBI, run) hit an RBI-single up the middle to score Benick which pulled UVawithin a run of Seton Hall after four innings.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Virginia scoredfive runs in the inning and took control of the game. LaVigne started theinning by getting on base after being hit by a pitch. Luis Giraldo (1-2,run) walked in the Cavaliers next at-bat. Two batters later, Ryan Kalamaya(1-3, RBI, run) hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored LaVigne to makeit a 2-2 game. Dan Street entered the game as a pinch hitter and walkedbefore Michael Floyd (1-4, RBI, run) hit an RBI-double to center field thatscored Giraldo to make it a 3-2 UVa lead. David Stone (1-4, two RBI, run)hit an RBI-single to center field that scored two more runs (Street, Floyd)before Hunter Wyant (1-3, two RBI) hit an RBI-doubled to center field thatscored Stone. When the inning had ended, Virginia found itself on top ofSeton Hall by the score of 6-2.
The Cavaliers added an insurance run in the eighth inning whenWyant hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Kalamaya, giving UVaa 7-2 advantage.
Seton Hall tried to mount a late rally and added two runs in thetop of the ninth, by that would be all the scoring Virginia would allow asthe Cavaliers held on for a 7-4 victory.
Junior pitcher Brandon Creswell (1-3) recorded his first win of theseason after he pitched 6.1 strong innings and allowed only two runs onseven hits with three strikeouts. LaVigne picked up his second save of theseason which gives him 13 in his career, tying him with pitcher Todd Ruyak(1989-92) as UVa’s all-time saves leader. Buddy Hausmann took the loss forSHU.
With the victory, Virginia improves to 6-8-1 overall, while theloss drops Seton Hall to 1-5 on the season. The Cavaliers will return toaction on Monday, March 6th when UVa travels to Richmond, Va. to face theVirginia Commonwealth Rams. That contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00p.m.
