CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team won the 2000 CavalierClassic title by posting a pair of victories Sunday afternoon at The Parkin Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers defeated Eastern Kentucky 7-1 andthen clinched the tournament title by defeating Wright State 8-0 finishingthe three-day tournament with a 4-0 record. With Sunday’s two wins,Virginia improves to 6-11 on the season. In the first game of the day,Wright State defeated Eastern Kentucky 5-1. Wright State is now 8-8 on theseason, while Eastern Kentucky drops to 2-10.
The Cavaliers won the tournament with a 4-0 record, while Delawareplaced second at 3-1. Wright State captured third at 2-2, while Ohiograbbed fourth with a 1-3 record. Eastern Kentucky placed fifth at 0-4.Ohio and Delaware concluded play in the tournament on Saturday.
Virginia had four players selected to the 10-player UVA CavalierClassic All-Tournament Team. The four selections were: second-year firstbaseman/pitcher Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon),Fourth-year pitcher Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga), fourth-year leftfielder Jen Krill (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington) , and second-yeardesignated player/left fielder Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin).Also named to the all-tournament team were: Mandy Welch (Delaware), KristiO’Connell (Delaware), Annie Divac (Wright State), Julia Tamai (WrightState), Kelli Bankert (Ohio), and Kelly Pikula (Eastern Kentucky).
In the Cavaliers’ 7-1 win over Eastern Kentucky in their first game of theday, Zagol led the way by throwing a two-hitter in a complete-game effort.She struck out seven and walked just one in improving to 3-4 on the season.Dennis drove in three runs with a pair of hits, while third-year rightfielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) also registered twohits and scored two runs. Jonelle Csora (0-3) took the loss for theColonels.
In the final game of the tournament, Dennis fired a two-hit shutout as theCavaliers pounded out 15 hits in an 8-0 win over Wright State. Dennis(1-2) struck out seven and walked one and helped her own cause with a pairof singles. UVa’s bottom three in the order, fourth-year first-baseman AmyPeay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee), Krill and McCabe, each had three hits andcombined for eight RBI and three runs scored in the game. Among Krillalmost hit for the cycle with a single, a double, and a triple. Kim Sycks(3-5) took the loss for the Raiders.
In Sunday’s first game, Wright State defeated Eastern Kentucky 5-0. WSU’sKristin Bultinck (4-3) limited the Colonels to one run on four hits inearning the victory. Michelle Demmitt and Julia Tamai paced the Raiderswith a pair of hits apiece.
Virginia returns to action March 10-12 when they travel to San Jose,Calif., to compete in the National Invitational. The ‘Hoos play Pacific,Central Michigan and Baylor in the opening day of competition.
