CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The IWLCA Poll Committee has released thefirst week’s rankings for the NCAA Division I lacrosse field for 2000.Rankings will be released weekly on Monday afternoons.
Although the #1 Terrapins lost on Sunday, they managed to hold onto the top spot. The gap, however, has been narrowed. Nine points nowseparate the top four teams. Then-#5 North Carolina defeated the #1 Terps14-13 in triple overtime.
On Friday Maryland held off #2 Duke 14-10. NorthCarolina had opened the season with a 13-5 loss to then-#7 James Madison.It was this victory for the Dukes that garnered them a pair of first-placevotes.
Virginia defeated #16 Syracuse to stay unbeaten, but the Hoos stillfell in the polls to fourth behind James Madison. The Princeton Tigersjumped a spot following their victory over then-#11 Rutgers.

In games involving ranked teams this week, #17 Vanderbilt continuesits swing against the Georges, facing #13 George Mason on Tuesday inFairfax. On Wednesday #7 Georgetown welcomes new-Big East rival #16Syracuse. #19 Old Dominion travels to #4 Virginia in search of statebragging rights. #10 Penn State travels to #1 Maryland on Thursday in amatchup of Division I’s winningest programs in history.
CAA play starts onFriday as GMU travels to #18 William & Mary. Also on Friday #5 NorthCarolina welcomes #9 Loyola. Former CAA member #14 Delaware returns to OldDominion for a game on Saturday while the Nittany Lions face the new #3James Madison Dukes in Harrisonburg on Saturday. Saturday sees half thetop-20 in action with three inter-poll games. Maryland goes to Syracuse,the Commodores are at North Carolina, and the Tribe goes north to face theHoyas.
