Women’s Tennis Downs Harvard, 5-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 57th-ranked University of Virginia women’s tennisteam received an 8-5 doubles win from the #1 doubles team of third-yearsChristie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) and Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach,Fla./Lake Worth Christian) to defeat 53rd-ranked Harvard Saturdayafternoon, March 4, in Chapel Hill, N.C. The victory improves UVa’s recordto 8-2. The Crimson fell to 3-4 with the loss.

Virginia led 4-2 at the conclusion of the six singles matches, but Harvardcame back to tie the match at 4-4 by winning the #2 and #3 doubles matches.Schweer and Cook’s 8-5 victory over Sanaz Ghazal and Sanja Bajin at #1doubles broke the tie and propelled UV to the victory.

Against Harvard, Virginia received singles victories at the #1, #3, #4 and#5 positions. Second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) earned athree-set victory at #1 singles. She won the first set 6-3, but droppedthe second set to Ghazal 6-3, before winning the third set 7-6 (1). At #3singles, first-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) defeatedAndrea Magyera 6-4, 6-2, while Cook beat Fleur Broughton 6-3, 6-4 at #4singles. First-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) cruised toa 6-0, 6-2 victory over Jennie Timoney at #5 to round out UVa’s singleswinners.

Schweer fell to Bajin 6-2, 6-2 at #2 singles, while third-year Kelly Weaver(Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback to Lara Naqushbandiat #6 singles.

The Cavaliers’ only victory in doubles play was Schweer and Cook’smatch-clinching victory at #1. O’Donnell and second-year Christine Kim(McLean, Va./Bishop Ireton) lost at #2 doubles 8-4 to Vedica Jain andMagyera. Weaver and Tuchband dropped an 8-2 decision to Broughton andSarah McGinty in the #3 doubles slot.

Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, March 14 when it travels to Miami,Fla., for a 2:00 p.m. match against 63rd-ranked Florida International. TheCavaliers then play 30th-ranked Miami in Coral Gables, Fla., on Wednesday,March 15 at 2:00 p.m.
