HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison scored six runs on fivehits in the third inning and rolled to a 14-6 victory against Virginiain non-conference college baseball Wednesday at Long Field/MauckStadium.
The Dukes, who snapped a four-game losing streak in the series,improved to 12-6 overall with their fifth straight victory. TheCavaliers slipped to 7-9-1 with only their third loss in 10 outings.
Junior left fielder Jeremy Hays (3-for-5) was one of three Dukes tocollect three hits and he drove in four runs. Freshman third basemanBrent Metheny went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and senior first basemanEric Bender was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. JMU, which banged 16 hits, gottwo hits apiece from junior center fielder Rich Thompson, sophomoredesignated hitter Pat Cunningham, and freshman second baseman NathanDoyle. The Dukes also stole seven bases.
Virginia junior third baseman Hunter Wyant went 4-for-5 with a pairof RBIs. Senior shortstop Tim LaVigne hit a solo homer in the ninthfor his first of the year. Sophomore second baseman Dan Street andsophomore outfielder Ryan Kalamaya had two hits each for theCavaliers.
Freshman left-hander Jake Gaiser (Oakton, Va./Herndon) picked uphis first collegiate pitching victory with three innings of one-runrelief. He allowed four hits and one walk and struck out one.
Freshman right-hander Chris Cochran started and worked into thefifth, but walked the bases loaded and yielded a two-run single toWyant before Gaiser came in from the bullpen.
Hays snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the third. Hays andjunior left fielder Greg Miller executed a double-steal beforeBender’s double to right-center gave the Dukes a 4-1 lead. Cunninghamsingled up the middle and Bender advanced to third. Doyle and Methenyfollowed with back-to-back successful hit-and-run plays that stretchedthe lead to 6-1. Sophomore catcher Dustin Bowman’s groundout allowedthe final run to score in the big inning.
The Dukes host Columbia in a three-game series this weekend, March10-12. Virginia hosts Eastern Michigan in a three-game set, startingwith a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
