CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Donald Hand and sophomore Chris Williamsearned second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors on Tuesday(March7), and freshman Travis Watson was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team.
Hand, a 5-11 guard from Paterson, N.J., averaged 15.0 points,2.7rebounds and 4.3 assists a game (fifth in the ACC) during the 1999-2000regular season. He leads the Cavaliers in assists (125) and three-pointfield goals (48). He is second among all ACC players in free throwsmade(124) and attempted (168) during the regular season.
Hand became the 33rd player in Virginia’s men’s basketballhistoryto score 1,000 points in a career during the 1999-2000 regular season.Hecurrently ranks 30th on Virginia’s career scoring list with 1,092points.He also ranks sixth on the Cavaliers’ career list for three-point fieldgoals (116) and eighth on UVa’s career assists list (347).
Hand earned honorable mention All-ACC honors last season.
The versatile Williams, a 6-7 forward from Birmingham, Ala.,averaged 15.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists a game during theregular season. He is shooting 52.4 percent (163-311, fourth in theACC)from the field and 37.0 percent (30-81) from three-point range.Williamsleads the Cavaliers in scoring, field goals made (163), steals (47) andaverage minutes played per game (31.7). He ranks ninth on Virginia’scareer list for three-point field goals with 66.
Williams was the ACC Rookie of the Year last year and earnedthird-team All-ACC honors.
Watson , a 6-7 center/forward from Brookneal, Va., averaged 11.3points and 8.3 rebounds a game, and shot 53.8 percent (129-240) from thefield during the regular season. He led the team in field goalpercentagefor those players with at least 20 attempts, and also led the Cavaliersinrebounding and blocked shots (28).
In addition to earning a spot on the All-Freshman team, Watsonearned honorable mention All-ACC honors.
The All-ACC first team included Shane Battier (Duke), LonnyBaxter(Maryland), Chris Carrawell (Duke), Juan Dixon (Maryland) and WillSolomon(Clemson).
Joining Hand and Williams on the second team were Jason Collier(Georgia Tech), Ed Cota (North Carolina), Joseph Forte (North Carolina)andTerence Morris (Maryland).
The All-ACC third team was comprised of Damous Anderson (FloridaState), Ron Hale (Florida State), Brendan Haywood (North Carolina),DariusSongaila (Wake Forest) and Jason Williams (Duke).
Joining Watson on the ACC All-Freshman team were Steven Blake(Maryland), Carlos Boozer (Duke), Joseph Forte (North Carolina) andJasonWilliams (Duke).
Virginia is 19-10 overall and 9-7 in the ACC heading into thisweek’s ACC Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. The Cavaliers are seeded thirdinthe tournament and meet North Carolina State in a quarterfinal game onFriday (March 10, 7:00 p.m.).
