CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Cavaliers (3-0) faced their second state challengethis afternoon as the #19 Monarchs (0-1) came to town and the Hoos rose tothe challenge, defeating Old Dominion 15-6. Fourth-year All-American AmyFromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) continued her hot play by scoring a hat trickfor the second consecutive game, scooping up seven ground balls, andcontrolling four draws. Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) alsonotched a hat trick, her second one of the season. Today’s game was alsoher 21st consecutive game in which she notched a goal, tying her for thirdall-time in that catagory.
The Hoos started quickly, scoring twice in a 23 second span to takethe early 2-0 lead. Sarah Gercke (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield)took a Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) dump into the eightfor the lead the Cavaliers would not relinquish. On the ensuing draw,Ashley Widger (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) got control and threw it in to KellyAllenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) who was cutting to the cageand scored at the 27:00 mark. Just over a minute later Haas drove the rightside of the cage to give Virginia a 3-0 lead.
Old Dominion got on the board a minute later as Pam Seebald took afeed from Marlaine Smith and drove to the cage to break the Cavalierstreak. But the Cavaliers answered as Haas scored her second consecutivegoal off a dump from Fromal at the 19:16 mark, and Mills Hook (Baltimore,Md./St. Paul’s) drove the left of the cage nine minutes later to putVirginia up 5-1, forcing the Monarchs to call a time out. Two minutes laterSmith drove to the cage on a great individual effort to cut the deficit to5-2. Once again the Cavaliers responded with a three-goal burst in a twominute span to go up 8-2. Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union)scored her first goal of the season on a fast break, getting a feed fromHook. After Frances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) made a saveon a Monarch shot, the Cavaliers worked the ball up quickly and Hook foundHansen wide open on the crease for the goal. A minute later Haas fedAumiller on a quickstick feed on the crease. Molly Cangemi (Timonium,Md./Notre Dame Prep) notched the final two assists in the half, the firstcoming at the end of the three goal burst as she hit Lacey Aumiller(Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) alone on the right side. Again ODU’sSeebald scored to stop the Virginia streak, but with 38 seconds left in thehalf Cangemi hit a streaking Lauri Kenis (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) to sendVirginia to the half with a 9-2 lead.
The Cavaliers got to double digits less than a minute in the secondhalf with Hook’s conversion of a free position 55 seconds into the stanza.Virginia then went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-3 lead over the next 15minutes. Fromal scooped up a ground ball and started a fast break that wasfinished with Gercke’s feed to Hansen on the crease at 22:50. Just over aminute later Fromal drove from the left side to give Virginia a 12-3 lead.At this point Mary Beth LaVerghetta (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) camein for the Cavaliers, replacing Segarra who had made nice saves in her 40minutes of play. Fromal scored again three minutes later as she took a feedfrom Lauren Aumiller in the arc, giving the Hoos a 10-goal lead. Haasconverted a free position at 13:45 for a 14-3 lead. At the 10:38 mark, LizMcCarthy (Palm Beach, Fla.) came in for LaVerghetta, who made no saveson no shots faced and allowed no goals in 10 minutes of play.
The Monarchs then put together a mini-run, scoring threeconsecutive goals over a six-minute span to bring the margin to below 10.Katie Heaney scored on a fast break at 8:23, Danielle Hensil notched a goalat 5:29, and Dana Wisniewski connected at 1:51 to move the Monarchs back to14-6. But Fromal closed out the scoring with a run from the top of the arcjust 23 seconds later to send Virginia to the 15-6 victory.
The Cavaliers close out their three-game homestand with a gameagainst the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday, March 11 at 4:00 pm. The game willbe played at Klocker Stadium.
