CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Cavaliers closed out their three game homestandwith a tilt against the UMBC Retrievers and made it a clean sweep with a14-6 victory today. The Cavaliers were led by Mills Hook (Baltimore,Md./St. Paul’s) who scored twice, had three helpers, and scooped up eightground balls to lead the Cavalier attack. First year Lauren Aumiller(Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) also notched five points with four goalsand an assist while Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) picked upnine ground balls to go along with her goal and assist.
Virginia won the opening draw and took it downfield and had threegood looks in the opening three minutes but each of the shots went wide.After breaking the Retriever clear the Cavaliers again went on the attackbut hit a pair of pipes, the first two of seven on the afternoon, on thenext possession. The Retrievers jumped on the board first as Renee Tirocchiraced down field and scored on a fast break at the 17:19 mark to give UMBCthe early lead.
The Cavaliers stormed back with a four-goal spurt in a span of justover two minutes with Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) netting the firsttwo. Fromal scored on a quickstick feed from Sambus at 12:54 and 78 secondslater rolled the crease off a feed from Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./MarpleNewtown)to give the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish. Hookstarted her scoring 44 seconds later as she connected on a free position togive UVA a 3-0 lead. Hook won the next draw and threw an outlet pass toKelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) who scored 16 secondslater to give Virginia a 4-1 lead at 10:36.
The Retrievers scored off the next draw as Tirocchi hit a streakingJamie Gerhart to pull within 4-2 at 10:02. UMBC won the next draw butturned the ball over which was picked up by Ashley Widger (Berwyn,Pa./Conestoga), who got the ball to Fromal who was awarded a free positionfor a shooting space violation. Fromal connected to put Virginia up 5-2.Lauren Aumiller got her first goal after working in the arc at 7:40. UMBCanswered as Tirocchi again worked a fast break to keep the Retrieverswithin two. But Virginia scored the final two goals of the half as thedefense stopped UMBC twice and the transition turned the caused turnoversinto goals. Widger caused a tunover at the restraining line and got theball to Hook who found Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) on thecrease for a 7-3 lead at 4:32. With just over a minute to play in the half,Lauri Kenis (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) caused a turnover low in thedefensive end and the Cavalier transition found Lauren Aumiller who fed astreaking Haas for an 8-3 halftime lead. Haas’ goal give her 22 consecutivegames scoring, which places her alone in third place on the Virginiaall-time list.
Virginia opened the scoring just 1:14 into the second period asHook converted a free position. Lauren Aumiller scored the Cavaliers’ nextgoal on a crease roll with 10:31 to play in the game. At this point LizMcCarthy (Palm Beach, Fla./Taft) came in for the Cavaliers to replacestarter Frances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) who finishedwith 6 saves. She was put to work right away as UMBC’s Tirocchi was awardedan 8-meter which she converted at 9:56 to cut the lead to 10-4.
But again Virginia scored quickly as Jiill Hansen (Killington,Vt./Woodstock Union) gave Virginia an 11-3 lead as she finished a creasefeed from Hook. Just 49 seconds later Hook caused a turnover on a UMBCclear and got the ball to Lauren Aumiller, who converted a free position tonet her hat trick, her second of the season. Aumiller notched her fourthgoal with just 1:10 to play as she took a feed from Cangemi to the cage.Tirocchi again raced downfield on the next draw to notch her fourth goal ofthe game with 44 seconds to play, but the Cavaliers won the final draw ofthe game and Sambus put a Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep)feed in the net with 8 seconds to play for the final score of 14-5.
Virginia 4-0) will face top-ranked Maryland in College Park onTues., March 14. Game time is 7:00 pm.
