Virginia Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Eastern Michigan

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball teamreturned to home action this afternoon to host the Eastern Michigan Eaglesin a doubleheader at the UVa Baseball Field. The Cavaliers won the firstgame 7-6 before dropping the second game by the score of 6-4.

In game one, Eastern Michigan jumped out to an early 4-0 lead aftertwo innings of play. The Eagles scored a run in the first inning whenVince Thomas scored on a passes ball to make it a 1-0 EMU lead. Then,Eastern Michigan added three more runs in the second inning when GregoryAnglin (2-5, two RBI, run) hit a two-run RBI double to left field thatscored Todd Moore (1-3, two runs) and Dave Lusky (1-4, run). The Eaglesscored another run in the inning when Nick Soliz (2-4, RBI) hit a RBIsingle that scored Anglin, making it 4-0 Eastern Michigan.

Virginia finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the thirdinning when Hunter Wyant (2-5, three RBI, run) scored Robbie Marvin on afielder’s choice. Both teams would add a run in the fifth inning to makethe score 5-2 in favor of EMU before the Cavaliers turned in a decisivesixth inning performance.

Trailing by three runs and mustering only one hit through fourinnings off Eagle pitcher Jeff Mull, Virginia roared back into the gamewhen Eastern Michigan relieved Mull with Ryan Janis. UVa scored five runsin the inning and took control of the game in the process as the Cavalierspulled out to a 7-5 lead. Michael Floyd started the inning off with a walkand advanced to third base when David Stone (1-5) reached base on an error.Stone then moved to second base on a wild pitch before Jon Benick (1-4, tworuns) walked to load the bases for UVa. Wyant came up big with a two-runRBI single to center field making it a 5-4 EMU lead. Tim LaVigne (2-4,run) singled to left field in UVa’s next at-bat to load the bases onceagain. Mark Rueffert (2-2, two RBI) walked in the next at-bat and Benickscored to make it a 5-5 contest. Grant Mayer (1-2, two RBI) then hit atwo-run RBI single that scored Wyant and LaVigne to make it a 7-5 Cavalierlead.

EMU added a run in the top of the eight to cut the UVa lead to 7-6,but that would be all the scoring the Eagles would gather for the remainderof the game as the Cavs held on for a 7-6 come-from-behind victory.

In the second contest (a seven-inning game) Virginia jumped out toan early 3-0 lead through four innings of play after recording single runsin the second, third and fourth innings, respectively.

UVa’s LaVigne (1-2, run) scored the first run of the game in thesecond inning when Floyd hit into a fielder’s choice. The Cavaliers madeit a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Benick (1-4, two RBI) scored Stone(2-4, run) on a ground ball hit to first base before extending their leadto 3-0 when Robert Word (1-1) hit a RBI-double to right field that scoredMayer.

However, Eastern Michigan answered right back in the fifth inningby scoring four runs to take a 4-3 lead. The Eagles added two more runs inthe top of the seventh inning when Palazzolo hit a RBI-single that scoredThomas and Anglin, making it a 6-4 Eastern Michigan lead.

Virginia tried to mount another comeback in the bottom of theseventh inning and scored a run when Benick hit a RBI-single to right fieldto score Marvin (2-3), making it a 6-4 contest. But EMU pitcher Tom Galluscalmly held the UVa offense in check for the remainder of the inning as theEagles retired the Cavaliers to end the game on top, 6-4.

With the completion of the doubleheader, Virginia head baseballcoach Dennis Womack coached his 1000th game of his career and now stands at497-496-7 in his 20 seasons as UVa’s head coach.

With the split on the afternoon, Virginia’s record moves to 8-10-1overall, while Eastern Michigan’s record stands at 4-9 on the season. Thetwo teams will return to action on Sunday, March 12th to compete in thefinal game of the three-game series. The contest is scheduled to begin at12:00 noon and will be played the UVa Baseball Field.
