CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball teamreturned to home action this afternoon to host the Eastern Michigan Eaglesin the third game of a three-game series with EMU at the UVa BaseballField. The Cavaliers won the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader by thescore of 7-6 before dropping the second contest by the score of 6-4. Thisafternoon, Virginia pulled away to a 12-4 victory over Eastern Michigan towin two of the three games in the weekend series.
UVa jumped on the scoreboard first by taking a 1-0 lead in thefirst inning. David Stone (3-5, three runs) started the Cavaliers off witha double to center field before Robbie Marvin (1-2, four RBI, two runs)recorded one of his four RBI on the afternoon by scoring Stone on afielder’s choice to make it a 1-0 Virginia lead.
UVa posted its second run of the game to pull ahead 2-0 in thethird inning when Michael Floyd (2-3, two runs) scored on another MarvinRBI. Floyd hit a double to left field to start off the inning. TheCavaliers would score two more runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead 4-0after Hunter Wyant (2-4, two runs) began the inning with a triple to centerfield. Tim LaVigne (1-4, two RBI, run) hit an RBI-single in Virginia’snext at-bat to score Wyant to make it a 3-0 UVa lead. The Cavaliers’ nextbatter, Ben Himes (2-4, four RBI, run), hit an RBI-double to center fieldthat scored LaVigne to give Virginia it’s four run lead.
Eastern Michigan gathered its first run of the contest in the topof the fifth inning after struggling all afternoon with Virginia’s LHP WillParker. Parker threw six complete innings and allowed only one run on fourhits and gathering six strikeouts after facing 21 batters.
EMU’s Dan Hyott (2-3, run) hit a single to get on base for theEagles and later scored in the inning when Dave Luskey (1-4) hit anRBI-double to center field to score Hyott, cutting the Virginia lead to4-1. However, UVa would answer right back in the fifth inning with a runof its own when Stone hit a triple to right center and later scored on aMarvin sacrifice fly to make it a 5-1 Cavalier lead.
Eastern Michigan would make the score 5-2 by scoring a run in thetop of the seventh inning before Virginia erupted for six runs in thebottom of the seventh inning to put the game away. Floyd and Stone startedthe inning off with singles before Marvin executed a beautiful sacrificebunt that went for an RBI single, scoring Floyd and making it a 6-2 game.Jon Benick (2-5, two RBI, run) hit an RBI-single to right field that scoredStone to make it a 7-2 lead. Wyant was hit by a pitch in UVa’s next at-batbefore LaVigne hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Marvin, makingit a 8-2 contest. The score quickly became 11-2 after Virginia’s Himes hita three-run homerun over right center field. Himes’ homerun scored bothWyant and Benick and was the first homerun of his collegiate career at UVa.
EMU scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning before theCavaliers added another run in the bottom of the eighth on a BenickRBI-double that scored Marvin to make it a 12-4 game. UVa held EMUscoreless in its last at-bat and went on the win the contest by the scoreof 12-4.
Parker picked up the win for the Cavaliers and the Eagles AnthonyTomey was handed the loss.
With the victory, Virginia improves to 9-10-1 on the season, whileEastern Michigan falls to 4-10 on the year. The Cavaliers will return tohome action on Tuesday, March 14th when Virginia hosts the PrincetonTigers. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be played atthe UVa Baseball Field.
