GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia fourth-year third baseman KarenBreshears (Camarillo, Calif./Cornerstone Christian) has been selected asthe ACC Softball Player of the Week for the week ending March 12.Breshears had nine hits in 13 at-bats for an impressive .692 battingaverage in five games this past week.
Breshears raised her average 101 points with her outstanding performance atthe plate and is now hitting a team-high .351 (20 for 57) on the season.In addition to the nine hits, Breshears scored four runs and drove in threeothers, including two with her first home run of the season. She alsoregistered a 1.000 slugging percentage.
Breshears opened the week by going 1-3 with a sacrifice and a run scored inUVa’s 4-3 eight-inning win over Pacific on March 10. In Virginia’s secondgame of the day, she went 1-1 with two sacrifices in a 5-3 loss to CentralMichigan. In the Cavaliers third game on Friday, a 5-3 loss to Baylor,Breshears was a perfect 3-3 at the plate. Against UCSB on March 11,Breshears was 2-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. The Cavaliers fell tothe Gauchos 7-5. In the ‘Hoos 10-2 loss to Utah in their final game of thetournament, she continued her torrid hitting with a pair of hits in as manyat-bats, including her first home run of the season.
The Cavaliers played all five of their games in the National InvitationalSoftball Tournament in Sunnyvale, Calif. Virginia went 1-4 on the week andnow stands at 7-15 on the season.
Virginia returns to action today, March 14, with a doubleheader atSacramento State in Sacramento, California.
