COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Cavaliers held a 6-5 lead at the break thanks to apair of goals by Mills Hook (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) and Jamie Haas(Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown), but the Terrapins came back with a 12-goalsecond half to rally for the win tonight in College Park. It was theCavaliers’ first loss of the season (4-1).
Virginia opened up the scoring as Hook converted a free position atthe 24:39 mark of the first half. The Cavaliers got the ball as FrancesSegarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) made a save on a Terp 8-metershot and got the ball in transition down the field. Maryland then went on a4-0 run in a four-minute span to take a 4-1 lead, but the Cavaliers scoredfive of the next six goals to take a 6-5 lead at the break, including a 4-0run of their own to take a 5-4 lead. Haas notched an 8-meter goal at 8:17.Off the draw, the Cavaliers broke downfield where Hook put in a rebound ofher own miss to pull within one just 35 seconds later. Three minutes laterAshley Widger (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) picked up a loose ball at therestraining line on a Maryland broken clearand got the ball back to AmyFromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) who found Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./NotreDame Prep) on the crease where Aumiller stuffed the ball in at 4:10,forcing the Terps to call a timeout. Off the next draw Aumiller gotcontrol, outletted the ball to Hook, who in turn threw an outlet pass toKelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) on a breakway for thego-ahead score. Maryland tied the score in the next minute, but on theensuing draw Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) ran through thecrowd and got control, worked the ball downfield where Haas got a shootingspace foul and converted the 8-meter mark for the 6-5 lead with 1:22 toplay in the half.
In the second half, the Terps opened with eight straight goals totake a 13-6 lead in a 16 minute period. Aumiller stopped the run with afree position goal that trickled in the cage at 12:43, and just over aminute later Hook rolled the crease and stuck in the ball to cut the leadto 14-8, but that would be all the offense the Cavliers would generate.
Widger led the Cavaliers with four ground balls while StephySamaras (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) led with three caused turnovers.
Virginia travels to University Park to take on the #13 Penn StateNittany Lions on Friday, March 17. Game time is 3:00 while the site isstill to be determined on the Penn State Campus.
