INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Virginia first-year Cara Lane(Charlotte, N.C./Providence) claimed third place in the finals of the400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:07.31 Thursday evening at the 2000NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships at Indiana UniversityNatatorium.
After the opening day of competition, the Cavaliers stand in ninth placewith 50 points through six events. Michigan is eighth with 50.5 points.
Lane, who was second after the afternoon preliminaries with a time of4:07.63, clocked a time of 4:07.31 to finish third behind Columbia’sChristina Teuscher and Stanford’s Jessica Foschi in the 400 free. Lane wasthe only freshman to qualify for the finals and with her finish she earnedfirst-team All-America honors.
Also in the 400 free, first-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje,Macedonia/Trinity Prep) took 10th place overall by finishing second in theconsolation finals with a time of 4:09.83. With her finish, Bosevskaearned honorable mention All-America accolades. Bosevska posted a time of4:10.01 in the preliminaries.
In the 50-meter freestyle, fourth-year Rebecca Cronk (Charlottesville,Va./Albemarle) grabbed 12th place with a time of 25.62 to earn honorablemention All-America honors.
The Cavaliers placed 11th in the 200-meter freestyle relay and 12th in the400-meter medley relay with times of 1:42.81 and 4:08.04, respectively.Both UVa relay squads earned honorable mention All-America accolades.
The Cavaliers have a total of 10 athletes competing at the Women’s NCAAChampionships, which run through Saturday, March 18. Virginia entered the2000 NCAAs tied for eighth in the nation with Southern Methodist. UVafinished 10th at the 1999 NCAA Championships.
