INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Virginia first-year Cara Lane(Charlotte, N.C./Providence) advanced to the finals of the 400-meterfreestyle by clocking a time of 4:07.63 in the first day of preliminariesat the 2000 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships at IndianaUniversity Natatorium Thursday afternoon. Lane is the second seed fortonight’s finals of the 400 free behind Columbia’s Christina Teuscher. TheCavaliers also had two other individuals and two relays qualify fortonight’s consolation finals.
In addition to Lane, UVa also had two other swimmers compete in the400-meter freestyle. First-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje,Macedonia/Trinity Prep) just missed advancing to the finals and will be thetop seed of the consolation finals after swimming a ninth-place time of4:10.01 in the preliminaries. Fourth-year Emily Carrig (Richmond,Va./Douglas Freeman) finished 30th in the 400 free with a time of 4:15.81in the prelims.
Fourth-year Rebecca Cronk (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) turned in a timeof 25.42 to place 11th in the prelims of the 50-meter freestyle. Cronkwill compete in the consolation finals tonight. The only other individualto compete for Virginia was third-year Valerie Oswald (Charlottesville,Va./McLean), who finished 24th in the 200-meter individual medley with atime of 2:16.98.
The Cavaliers placed 11th in the preliminaries of the 200-meter freestylerelay and 400-meter medley relays to qualify for tonight’s consolationfinals. In the first event of the meet, the UVa foursome of fourth-yearKori Forster (New Orleans, La./Benjamin Franklin), third-year Megan Iffland(Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s), second-year Kate Slonaker (Summit, N.J./OakKnoll) and Cronk touched in 1:42.41 to take 11th-place in the 200 freestylerelay. In the final event of the prelims, the 400-meter medley relay,Virginia was also 11th with a time of 4:08.68. Iffland, Slonaker, Forsterand Cronk teamed in the 400 medley relay.
The Cavaliers have a total of 10 athletes competing at the Women’s NCAAChampionships, which run through Saturday, March 18. Virginia entered the2000 NCAAs tied for eighth in the nation with Southern Methodist. UVafinished 10th at the 1999 NCAA Championships.
