No. 54 Women’s Tennis Falls To Miami, 7-2

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The 54th-ranked University of Virginia women’s tennisteam was defeated by 29th-ranked University of Miami 7-2 in Coral Gables,Fla. on March 15. Virginia first-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn,N.J./Millburn) won her singles match and teamed with third-year KellyWeaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) for the Cavaliers’ second win of thematch. The ‘Hoos drop to 9-3 with the loss, while Miami improves itsrecord to 7-6.

The Canes clinched victory over the Cavaliers by winning five of sixsingles matches and were also victorious in two of the three doublesmatches.

Virginia received it’s lone singles victory at the #5 position fromTuchband as she posted 6-4, 6-2 victory over Miami’s Igne DeVilliers.Tuchband also recorded a doubles win for the Cavaliers’ only other victoryin the match. She teamed with Weaver to defeat Miami’s Allison Baxter andLaura Scaglione 8-2 at #3 doubles. Weaver was not as fortunate in her #6singles match as she dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Eva Jimenez.

Merideth Laughlin defeated UVa second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah,N.J./Mahwah) at #1 singles 6-3, 6-2. Alanna Broderick, Marcy Hora andScaglione swept the #2, #3 and #4 singles matches over Virginia third-yearChristie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial), first-year Henriette Williams(Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and third-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach,Fla./Lake Worth Christian), respectively. Schweer lost 6-2, 6-4 toBroderick, while Williams suffered a 7-6 (6), 7-5 setback to Hora. Cookfell to Scaglione 6-4, 6-1.

The Cavaliers also lost at #1 and #2 doubles. Hora and Jimenz won at #1doubles over Virginia’s Schweer and Cook 8-3, while Laughlin and Broderickdefeated O’Donnell and second-year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./BishopIreton) 8-3 at #2 doubles,

Virginia returns to action on Friday, March 17 when it competes againstDartmouth in Coral Gables, Fla. at 10:00 a.m. The Cavaliers return toCharlottesville March 19, to take on the Seminoles of Florida State at 2:00p.m. at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
