STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The University of Virginia used a 7-0 run in the firsthalf to take charge of the game and held on to defeat the Penn State NittanyLions 13-7 today in College Park. Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s)had a game-high three goals to lead the Cavaliers (5-1) offensively whilegoalie Frances Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) made seven savesand picked up seven ground balls to pace the Cavaliers.
Penn State (1-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead five minutes into the firsthalf as they won the first three draws and scored right away. But theVirginia defense clamped down and the offense roared to life to put theCavaliers in control of the game. Hook caused a turnover at the restrainingline and outletted the ball to Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) whofound Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) down low to get the Hooson the board at 19:18. Four minutes later Alissa DeCarlo (Glen Mills,Pa./Garnet Valley) caused a turnover in the defensive end and got the ball toStephy Samaras (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) who ran it the length of the fieldbefore assisting Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) on the next goal. Virginiatied it up a minute later as Hook converted a free position, forcing PennState to take a timeout. Out of the timeout Penn State got the draw butSegarra made a save and in transition the offense found Haas who scored inher 24th consecutive game with a rocket at 12:14, giving the Cavaliers thelead they would not relinquish.
After a Penn State defensive stop two minutes later, Hansen beat out aNittany Lion on a loose ball and on the restart fed Kelly Allenbach (WestChester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) who was all alone in the arc and scored at 9:30to give UVa a 5-3 lead. Four minutes later Segarra made a save on a PSU freeposition and the transition brought the ball up the field where Molly Candemi(Timonium, Pa./Notre Dame Prep) scored at 5:34 to make the score 6-3. Cangemithen caused a turnover two minutes later and with the ground ball foundLauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) whose goal at 3:38 made thescore 7-3. Penn State scored just before the half to make the halftime score7-4.
Virginia jumped out on top early in the second half as Lauri Kenis(Havertown, Pa./Haverford) got the draw and found a streaking Hook just 42seconds into the period. Penn State answered a minute later to keep theNittany Lions within four, but Ashley Widger (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) caused aturnover on a Penn State attempted clear and in the settled attack LaurenAumiller fed Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) to push Virginia’smargin to 5 with 22 minutes to play. The Cavaliers went up by six with justunder 11 minutes to play as Kenis picked up another loose ball and found astreaking Sambus in the arc who scored, forcing Penn State to take a timeout.
The Nittany Lions scored following the timeout, but Virginia scored twominutes later as Segarra picked up a Penn State overthrow and outletted theball to Fromal to got the ball to Hook who drew a shooting space foul. Hookconverted the free position to give UVA the 11-6 lead. Fromal scored herselfwith just over four minutes to play as she sliced through the arc, but withjust over two minutes remaining in the game Penn State scored again to makethe score 12-7. Virginia closed out the scoring as Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore,Md./Notre Dame Prep) quicksticked a feed from Haas at 1:06 for the finalscore of 13-7.
Frances Segarra’s seven ground balls led the Cavaliers. The Hoos willnext be in action on Wednesday as the #18 Tribe comes to Charlottesville.Game time against William and Mary is 6:00 pm.
