CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team opens its 2000 spring season with a home regatta against San Diego State on Saturday (March 18) at the Rivanna Reservoir. The competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
UVa’s varsity eight is ranked second in the nation in the 2000 preseason poll conducted by USRowing and the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). In the varsity eight rankings, Brown is ranked first and Virginia is second. California-Berkeley is ranked third, and Washington and Southern California are tied for fourth.
At last year’s NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships, Brown won the varsity eight competition with Virginia finishing second and California-Berkeley third.
UVa won the second varsity eight, and finished second in both the first varsity eight and the varsity four to finish tied with Brown for the most points in the final team standings at last year’s NCAA Championships. Virginia and Brown both finished with 56 points in the team competition, but the team championship went to Brown based on the NCAA tiebreaker of highest finish in the first varsity eight.
