SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After suffering three consecutive one-run losses, theVirginia softball team finally got on the winning side of a one-run game asthe Cavaliers defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi 3-2 in eight innings in thefinal game of pool play at the Sacramento Classic Friday afternoon, March17 at the Sacramento Softball Complex.
With the win, UVa improves to 9-21on the season, while Texas A&M Corpus Christi falls to 8-16-1. TheCavaliers begin bracket play in the Sacramento Classic on Saturday.
Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when first-yearshortstop Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) drove in third-yearright fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) with a single tocenter field.
The ‘Hoos extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth whenfourth-year designated player Jen Krill (Huntington Beach,Calif./Huntington) knocked in second-year left fielder Kelly McCabe (MapleGlen, Pa./Upper Dublin) with a base hit to left. McCabe reached base via awalk and stole second and third base before scoring on Krill’s hit.
The Islanders tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixthinning. Shelley Oetken scored the first run after a Virginia error andthen Janelle Sanders drove in the tying run with a double.
The Cavaliers broke the tie with a run in the top of the eighth.Fourth-year center fielder Corinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) was placedon second to start the inning. She stole third base and scored on Rojas’single to right field. Texas A&M Corpus Christi was unable to score thetying run in the bottom of the eighth.
Rojas led the ‘Hoos with a perfect 3-3 effort at the plate and also drovein two runs. Second-year Erin Allinder (Norco, Calif./Norco) pitched thefirst 4.1 innings of the game and kept the Islanders off the scoreboard.She allowed six hits and struck out three batters. Fourth-year ChrissyQuinn (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) picked up the win by pitching3.2 innings in relief of Allinder. Quinn (3-8) allowed two runs on fourhits. She struck out one and walked two.
