SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Virginia softball team suffered itsthird-consecutive one-run loss in the Sacramento Classic as theCavaliersfell to Wisconsin 2-1 in eight innings Friday afternoon, March 17 at theSacramento Softball Complex. With the loss, UVa falls to 8-21 on theseason, while Wisconsin improves to 15-7. The Cavaliers conclude poolplayin the Sacramento Classic by playing Texas A&M Corpus Christi laterFridayevening.
Virginia opened play in the Sacramento Classic on Thursday by dropping a6-5 decision to sixth-ranked California. The Golden Bears scored fiverunsin the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 5-1 Virginia lead. The’Hoosthen fell to Portland State 2-1 in nine innings later Thursday evening.
In the 2-1 eight-inning loss to Wisconsin on Friday, Virginia tied thegameat 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh with a single run, but the Badgerscameright back and scored the winning run in the top of the eighth.
Fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) was the hard-luck loserasshe allowed just four hits and one earned run in eight innings of work.Zagol (5-7) also struck out seven batters and walked three in thecomplete-game effort. Wisconsin’s Andrea Kirchberg earned the win with1.1innings of no-hit relief of starter Jen Cummings.
The Badgers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but the Cavalierssent the game into extra innings with a run in the bottom of theseventh.Second-year left fielder Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin)received a one-out walk and promptly stole second base. Fourth-yearcenterfielder Corinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) delivered McCabe with an RBIsingle. Good then stole second and advanced to third on fourth-yearsecondbaseman Amy Peay’s (Mechanicsville, Pa./Atlee) second single of thegame.Good was stranded at third as first-year shortstop Ruby Rojas (SantaAna,Calif./Mater Dei) grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.
Wisconsin started the top of the eighth with Teresa Mendez on second andsacrificed her to third. With one out, Mendez scored on a UVa errorthatgave the Badgers the lead for good, 2-1. The Cavaliers were unable toscore the equalizer in the bottom of the eighth.
In addition to Peay, fourth-year left fielder Jen Krill (HuntingtonBeach,Calif./Huntington) also banged out a pair of hits.
