Virginia Softball Splits Pair Of Saturday Games

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Virginia softball team split a pair of games inbracket play of the Capital Classic at the Sacramento Softball ComplexSaturday, March 18. The Cavaliers opened bracket play with a 4-1 victoryover Middle Tennessee State Saturday morning, but lost to Wisconsin 8-3 inthe afternoon and were eliminated from the tournament. Virginia finishedthe tournament with a 2-4 record and now stands at 10-22 on the season.

In the 4-1 win over Middle Tennessee, fourth-year Stacey Zagol (Berwyn,Pa./Conestoga) earned her sixth victory of the season against six losses asshe allowed just one unearned run on three hits in a complete-gameperformance.

Fourth-year center fielder Corinne Good (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) led theCavaliers offensively with two hits, a RBI and a run scored. Fourth-yearsecond baseman Amy Peay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) also posted a pair ofhits.

Virginia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Goodand first-year designated player Stephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley,Calif./Mount Miguel) had run-scoring singles in the decisive inning.

In the 8-3 loss to Wisconsin, the Badgers overcame a 2-0 deficit with asixth run fourth inning. Five of the six Wisconsin runs in the inning wereunearned. Second-year Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon)was the hard-luck loser as she gave up six runs (only one earned) on fivehits in 3.2 innings of work. Zagol pitched the final 3.1 innings in reliefof Dennis (1-7).

Calhoun, Good and first-year shortstop Johanna Kaiser (Scottsdale,Ariz./Saguaro) led the ‘Hoos with two hits apiece. Calhoun and Kaiser eachdrove in a run as well.

Virginia returns to action March 24-26 when its hosts the Hoo’s WhoTournament at The Park in Charlottesville, Va. In addition to theCavaliers, the tournament features Pittsburgh, Bowling Green, Rutgers andPenn State. UVa hosts Pittsburgh at 4:00 p.m. on Friday (March 24) in itsfirst action of the tournament.
