INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Virginia first-year Mirjana Bosevska(Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) finished fourth in the 400-meterindividual medley and the Cavaliers took seventh place in the 200-metermedley relay in another productive day at the 2000 NCAA Division ISwimming and Diving Championships at Indiana University Natatorium Fridayevening. Fourth-year Rebecca Cronk (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) swamthe anchor freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay to earn her school recordbreaking 18th All-America honor.
After 13 events, Virginia is tied with UCLA for eight place with 113points. The two teams trail Northwestern by 16.5 points for seventhplace. Georgia leads the 2000 NCAA Championships after the first two daysof competition with 336.5 points. Arizona is second with 299 and Stanfordis third with 245.
Bosevska entered the NCAA Championships as the seventh seed in the400-meter individual medley and turned in an outstanding performance infinishing fourth with a time of 4:40.47. She entered this evenings finalwith the seventh best preliminary time (4:43.12). With her top eightfinish, Bosevska earned first-team All-America honors.
The Cavaliers finished seventh in the 200-meter medley relay with a timeof 1:52.69. UVa was sixth after the afternoon prelims (1:52.57).Third-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) led off the medleyrelay in the backstroke, followed by second-year Kate Slonaker (Summit,N.J./Oak Knoll) in the breaststroke. Fourth-year Kori Forster (NewOrleans, La./Benjamin Franklin) swam the butterfly leg and Cronk swam thefreestyle anchor leg. Virginia earned honorable mention All-Americaaccolades with its finish and it marked the 18th time Cronk has garneredAll-America honors, which sets a new school record. Prior to Cronk, theUVa women’s swimming record for the number of times being named anAll-American was 17 by Melanie Valerio (1988-91). It is the fourth eventin the 2000 NCAA Championships that Cronk has earned All-America honors(50 freestyle, 200 free relay and 400 medley relay).
In the third event of the evening, the 100-meter butterfly, Forsterfinished 16th overall with a time of 1:02.32 to capture honorable mentionAll-America accolades. Iffland also earned honorable mention All-Americahonors with her 16th-place performance in the 100-meter backstroke(1:02.26).
The Cavaliers have a total of 10 athletes competing at the 2000 Women’sNCAA Championships, which run through Saturday, March 18. Virginiaentered the 2000 NCAAs tied for eighth in the nation with SouthernMethodist. UVa finished 10th at the 1999 NCAA Championships.
