CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The 54th-ranked University of Virginia women’stennis team lost to 20th-ranked Florida State 7-2 in the Cavaliers’ ACCopener Sunday, March 19 in Charlottesville. With the loss, UVa falls to9-5 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida Stateimproves 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.
The Seminoles took a 4-2 lead after singles play and swept all threedoubles matches for the 7-2 victory.
Third-years Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian) andKelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) registered the Cavaliers’ wins inthe match. Cook won her #4 singles match 6-3, 6-4 over Jessica Balbuena,while Weaver posted a 7-6 (8), 6-4 win over Ali Weber at #6 singles.
At the #1 singles slot, second-year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah)lost a tough three-set match to 84th-ranked Alida Gallovits 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.Third-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) dropped a 6-1, 7-6(4) decision to Nanette Duxin at #2. In the third singles slot, first-yearHenriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) won the first set, butcouldn’t hold on to her lead as she lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Kia Asberg. At#5 singles, first-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) fell toMarina Raic 6-4, 7-6.
In doubles play, the Seminoles won all three matches. Gallovits and Duxinteamed to defeat UVa’s top duo of Cook and Schweer 8-4 at #1. Asberg andRaic posted an 8-6 victory at #2 over Virginia’s O’Donnell and second-yearChristine Kim (McLean, Va./Bishop Ireton). At #3 doubles, FSU’s Weber andBalbuena defeated Tuchband and Weaver 8-1.
Virginia returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 when it hosts Richmond at2:00 p.m. at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville.
