Markos, Turner Named Special Teams Co-Coordinators At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head football coach George Welshannounced today that Art Markos and David Turner have been named specialteams co-coordinators.

In this new position, they will share the responsibility of overseeing fourphases of special teams play-punt team, punt return team, kickoff team andkickoff return team.

They will be assisted in these four areas by the other members of thecoaching staff.

Markos, a member of Welsh’s original staff that came to Charlottesville in1982, was named UVa’s wide receivers coach last month. He had coached thedefensive secondary since 1991. Markos was the defensive line coach from1982-85, the defensive ends coach from 1986-88 and the defensiveends/strong safety coach in 1989-90. He has coached four All-Americans atUVa, including punter Will Brice, defensive backs Percy Ellsworth andAnthony Poindexter and defensive end Ray Savage.

The upcoming season is Turner’s fourth at UVa. He coached the defensivetackles at UVa from 1997-98, before taking over as linebackers coach lastseason. Turner moves back to defensive tackles coach this season.
