CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Cavaliers (6-1) gave up the first goal to the Tribe(1-4) but scored eight consecutive goals to take control of the gametonight and turned back William & Mary 15-3 at the University Hall TurfField. The Tribe was the first team that the Cavaliers faced in schoolhistory, in a game played March 19 1976 in Charlottesville, and the 35-gameseries is the longest one for the Cavaliers. Virginia’s sixth consectutivevictory over the Tribe was keyed by Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley)’s fivegoals and Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown)’s four goals and sevenassists, which gives her 99 career points. Defensively, Frances Segarra(Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) made nine saves to help thwart theTribe attack.
William & Mary’s Amy Pugno ran down the arc and scored the openinggoal of the game at the 25:31 mark, but Virginia answered with aneight-goal run in 14 minutes to take control of the game, including a hattrick by Fromal. The first seven goals came in an eight-minute stretch.Segarra’s save of a Tribe free position that would have given William &Mary a 2-0 lead was instead taken down the field where Haas hit Fromal in aset attack who drove from the right side and scored, tying the game. Threeminutes later Lauri Kenis (Havertown, Pa./ Haverford) intercepted anattempted Tribe clear and ran the ball down to the offense, where MillsHook (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) drew a shooting space foul and convertedit at 16:26 to give the Cavaliers the lead they would not relinquish. Onthe ensuing draw Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) caused aturnover which was picked up by Kelly Allenbach (West Chester,Pa./Henderson), who found a streaking Fromal who scored, giving UVa a 3-0lead.
Haas scored in her 25th consecutive game with a drive from the toptwo minutes later, forcing the Tribe to take a timeout. Fromal completedher hat trick on the next draw as she got control and raced downfield just11 seconds later to put Virginia up 5-1. Virginia won the next draw andbrought the ball downfield but the Tribe’s Jacque Orsi made one of her ninesaves. On the clear, Haas picked up the overthrow and threw it to Hansenwho was all alone down low and converted the turnover for a 6-1 lead at12:20. Kenis won the next draw and found Gina Sambus (Garden City,N.Y./Garden City) who drew a shooting space foul. Sambus’ conversion 37seconds later gave the Cavaliers a 7-1 lead.
Ashley Widger (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) caused a turnover on therestraining line on an attempted Tribe clear and the Cavaliers worked theball downfield where Sarah Gercke (Charlottesville, Va./St.Anne’s-Belfield) found Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield) streakingthrough the arc for an 8-1 lead. The Tribe’s Lindsey Lowman stopped the runas she converted an Pugno pass with 1:28 on the clock to send the teams tohalftime with Virginia sporting an 8-2 lead.
Five minutes into the second half Haas scored her second goal on adrive from the top. Fromal pushed the Hoos into double digits as she pickedup a loose ball and stuffed it in exactly three minutes later to give theHoos a 10-2 lead. Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) then causeda turnover on a Tribe clear attempt and found Haas in the eight, whocompleted her hat trick with ten minutes gone in the second half.
Lindsay notched her second goal of the game as the Cavaliersconverted an overthrow on a Tribe clear attempt at 12:50. Sambus picked upa loose ball on a missed William & Mary clear three minutes later and Haasscored her fourth goal of the game at 9:00, forcing the Tribe to take atimeout. Out of the break the Tribe won the draw control and Tara Hannafordraced through the fan, scoring 23 seconds later to stop the five-goal run.But the Cavaliers closed out the scoring as Fromal notched her fifth goalon a run through the arc at 7:15 and Gercke quicksticked a Haas feed on thecrease with 3:08 to play.
Fromal and Sambus led the Cavaliers with four ground balls andSambus also had four caused turnovers. Kenis and Fromal also had three drawcontrols each to lead the Cavaliers. Segarra finished with nine saves andtwo goals allowed in 44 minutes of play. Liz McCarthy (Palm Beach,Fla./Taft) came in for the Cavaliers at 14:00 and allowed one goal in eightminutes. Mary Beth LaVerghetta (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) closed outthe last six minutes for Virginia but did not face any shots.
Virginia welcomes the seventh-ranked Tar Heels to Charlottesvilleon Saturday, March 25. Game time against the Heels is at 12:00 on the TurfField.
