CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team split a pair of games inthe opening day of the 2000 UVA Hoo’s Who Tournament on Friday, March 24 atThe Park in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers began the day with a 9-0five-inning victory over Pittsburgh, but dropped a 3-0 decision to BowlingGreen in the final game of the day. Bowling Green also posted a 5-0 winover Pittsburgh in the other game of the tourney. Virginia now stands at11-23 on the season, while Bowling Green improves to 12-4. Pittsburgh isnow 9-12 on the season.
The Cavaliers improved their home record to 5-0 with a 9-0five-inning win over Pittsburgh. The Cavaliers jumped out to a quick startagainst the Panthers with four runs in the top of the first inning. UVaadded another run in the top of the second and four more in the fourth inthe win.
Third-year right-fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) andfourth-year second baseman Amy Peay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) opened thefirst inning with back-to-back singles. Fourth-year center fielder CorinneGood (Ephrata, Pa./Eprata) drove in the Cavaliers’ first run with a singleto center. Good, first-year catcher Stephanie Calhoun (Spring Valley,Calif./Mount Miguel) and second-year pitcher Kristen Dennis (Encinitas,Calif./ La Costa Canyon) all scored when fourth-year left fielder JenKrill’s (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington) fly ball was misplayed byPittsburgh’s left fielder to account for three more UVa runs in the first.Second-year designated player Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin)scored in the second on Peay’s suicide squeeze after stealing second andthird base. The big hit in Virginia’s four-run fourth inning was athree-run homer by fourth-year third baseman Karen Breashears (Camarillo,Calif./Cornerstone Christian).
Dennis (2-7) picked up the win over Pittsburgh with four innings of two-hitball. She struck out five batters and did not allow a walk. Second-yearErin Allinder (Norco, Calif./Norco) pitched the final inning for the Cavs.Laura LeViere (3-3) took the loss for Pittsburgh. Young and McCabe bothhad two hits for UVa.
Bowling Green’s Jessie Milosek fired a five-hit shutout to lead the Falconsto a 3-0 win over Virginia in the third game of the tournament. The losssnapped UVa’s five-game home winning streak. Milosek struck out three andwalked just one in improving to 4-1. Fourth-year Chrissy Quinn(Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East) took the loss for Virginia and is now3-9 on the year. Dennis was the lone Cavalier to record two hits in thegame as she went 2-2 with a walk. Bowling Green scored all three of itsruns in the bottom of the fifth. Angie Domschot drove in the game-winningrun with a single to left. Libby Voshell drove in the second run with adouble.
Bowling Green also won the second game of the day as it defeatedPittsburgh 5-0. The Falcons’ McKenna Houle pitched a complete-game two-hitshutout. She struck out five batters and walked two. Nikki Gasti took theloss for the Panthers. The Domschot sisters, Angie and Jenny, both hittriples and drove in a run for the Falcons.
The 2000 UVA Hoo’s Who Tournament resumes tomorrow with four games.Play begins at 9:00 a.m. Virginia plays its final two games of thetournament on Sunday, March 26.
