CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team returned to home action this afternoon to host the #22 ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons at the UVa Baseball Field in front of 333 spectators. The Cavaliers entered their contest with the Demon Deacons having won 12 of their last 18 contests and were looking to even out their 1-2 record in the Atlantic Coact Conference. UVa knew the task would not be an easy won and battled Wake Forest through nine solid innings of play before falling to the Demon Deacons by the score of 4-0.
Wake Forest was highlighted by pitcher Scott Siemon (7-1), who threw a compete game and allowed only three Cavaliers hits in the entire contest. David Stone (1-4) gathered one of Virginia’s three hits in the game when he singled in UVa’s first at-bat. However, the Cavaliers managed only two more hits the rest of the game after Mark Rueffert (1-3) hit a single in the fifth inning before Robbie Marvin (1-4) hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Virginia’s Alexander “Shooter” Starr (1-2) pitched a solid 7.1 innings himself despite taking the loss. Starr allowed four runs on seven scattered hits before being replaced by teammate Greg Hansard in the eighth inning. Dan Street made his first pitching appearance this season for UVa as he closed out the game for the Cavaliers.
Wake Forest took an early 1-0 lead when Danny Borrell (2-4, run) led off the second inning with one of his two doubles on the afternoon. He later scored in the inning when teammate Dan Conway (1-4, two RBI) hit into a fielder’s choice that resulted in a RBI.
The Demon Deacons would hold onto their one-run lead before adding another run in the fifth inning when Jamie Athas (1-3, run) singled, stole second base and eventually scored on Cory Sullivan’s (1-4, RBI, run) RBI-single to make it a 2-0 Demon Deacon advantage.
Wake Forest would go on to add two more insurance runs in the eighth inning when Sullivan scored after Chase Voshell (1-4, RBI, run) hit a RBI-single with one out. Voshell eventually scored a run himself to make it a 4-0 Demon Deacon lead when Conway recorded his second RBI of the game on a single. WFU would not relinquish its four run lead and held on to shutout the Cavaliers.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 12-13-1 overall, 1-3 in the ACC. The victory improves Wake Forest’s record to 19-8 overall, 4-3 in the conference. The Cavaliers and Demon Deacons will meet again on Saturday, March 25th at the UVa Baseball Field to play game two of the three game weekend series. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
