MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – University of Virginia second-year All-American EdMoses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) shattered his own short course worldrecord in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 57.66 Friday evening,March 24 in the second day of competition at the 2000 NCAA Division I Men’sSwimming and Diving Championships at the University Aquatic Center inMinneapolis. Moses originally broke the short course (25-meter pool) worldrecord in the prelims of the 100 breaststroke Friday afternoon with a timeof 58.05. He then lowered that mark by 39 hundredths of a second inwinning his first NCAA title. Moses shaved 85 hundredths of a second offthe short course world record today. He is also the short course worldrecord holder in the 50-meter breaststroke, which he set with a time of26.96 in the 50-meter split of his first world record swim in the prelimsof the 100 breast Friday afternoon.
Moses clocked a time of 26.99 in his 50-meter split in tonight’s final andswam the final 50 meters in 30.67 seconds, which is incredible consideringthe first 50 meters includes a dive with the start of the race.
With his NCAA title, Moses becomes just the second UVa male swimmer tobecome a NCAA Champion and also garners first-team All-America accolades.Shamek Pietucha, who won the 200 butterfly in 1999, is the first Cavalierto win a NCAA swimming title.
Prior to today, Russia’s Roman Sloudnov held the short course world recordin the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 58.51 at the Short CourseWorld Championships in Athens on March 17. Moses’ time of 26.96 through 50meters also broke Germany’s Mark Warnecke’s 50-meter short course worldrecord set on December 11, 1998. In addition to the world records, Mosesnow also holds the American and U.S. records in the both the 100 and50-meter breaststroke. In the 100 breast, Moses broke the former Americanrecord held by Jeremy Linn (59.45). The old U.S. Open record was 58.79 byFred deBurghgraeve of Belgium.
Virginia fourth-year All-American Doak Finch (Southern Pines, N.C./O’Neal)finished 10th overall in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 53.15 tocapture honorable mention All-America honors. UVa also tied with SouthernCal for 13th place in the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:38.83.The foursome of second-year Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside),Moses, Finch and third-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) combinedto swim the relay that was not seeded in the event. The top 15 teams wereseeded in the 200 medley relay.
UVa is in a three-way tie for 11th place with 75 points through 12 eventsof the NCAA Championships. Nebraska and Georgia are tied with UVa for 11thplace. Texas leads the NCAAs with 350 points, while Auburn is second with261.
The Cavaliers have a total of eight athletes competing at the Men’s NCAAChampionships, which run through Saturday, March 25. Virginia entered the2000 NCAAs ranked a program-best seventh in the latest College SwimmingCoaches Association of America Top 25 Poll. UVa finished 14th at the 1999NCAA Championships, its highest finish ever. The NCAA Championships arebeing swum in meters for the first time.
