Cavaliers Win Atlantic Coast Conference opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The 38th-ranked University of Virginia men’s tennisteam defeated the 64th- ranked Demon Deacons of Wake Forest 5-2 Saturday,March 25 at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville. With thewin, the Cavaliers improve to 11-3 on the season and 1-0 in the AtlanticCoast Conference. Wake Forest falls to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in the ACC.

The Cavaliers opened the match by winning two of three doublesmatches to earn the doubles point and won four singles matches to securethe 4-2 victory over Wake Forest.

The Cavaliers started the afternoon in doubles action. Third-yearsBrian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery(Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), currently ranked 14th, won at #1 doublesover Wake Forest’s Raul Munoz and Johan Hansen 8-2. At #2 doubles, the46th-ranked tandem of fourth-year John Winter (Richmond, Va./St.Christopher’s) and third-year Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens)defeated Michael Murray and Michael Berger by a score of 8-5. To round outdoubles action, third-years Robert Abendroth (Lafayette, La./St. Stephens)and Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) fell to Wake’s JustinKaufmann and Trent Brendon 8-5.

In singles play, No. 5 Vahaly dominated Munoz, defeating him 6-0,2-0. Munoz retired in the second set due to a back injury. No. 39Montgomery downed No. 100 Murray 6-2, 7-6 at the #2 slot. At #4 singles,Crocker took out Wake Forest’s Hansen 6-4, 6-3. Hunter, at #5 singles,fell to Kaufmann 6-3, 7-6. Abendroth lost his match at #6 singles toBrendon 4-6, 6-3, 1-0. Abendroth retired with an ankle injury. Winter’smatch at #3 with No. 91 Berger was finished indoors due to rain. Wintereventually won the match over nationally ranked Berger 7-6, 6-7, 6-0.

Virginia returns to action on Sunday, March 26 when it competesagainst 55th-ranked Florida State. The Cavaliers take on the Seminoles at1:00 p.m. at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
