CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Second-ranked Virginia outscored seventh-rankedJohns Hopkins 8-1 in the final period to defeat the Blue Jays 16-8 in men’slacrosse Saturday before 3,428 in Klockner Stadium.

Leading 8-7 to open the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers (4-1) got offto a quick start when sophomore attack Ian Shure scored just seven secondsinto the period. Jason Hard won the opening faceoff and fed senior attackDrew McKnight on the wing. McKnight hit Shure on the crease for the easygoal. McKnight scored just over three minutes later to push Virginia’s leadto 10-7.

Hopkins’ freshman attack Bobby Benson scored his fourth goal of thegame with 9:15 remaining in the period to cut the Cavalier lead to 10-8,but Virginia scored three goals in a two-minute span to extend the lead to13-8 with 4:14 remaining.

Sophomore attack Conor Gill led the Cavaliers with four goals,including two in the fourth quarter. David Bruce and Jay Jalbert each hadthree for Virginia.

Johns Hopkins (1-3) cut a 7-3 halftime deficit to one after threequarters by outscoring Virginia 4-1 in the period. Benson and Adam Donegereach had two goals in the quarter.
