CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia took the early 1-0 lead,but the #7 Tar Heels outscored the Cavaliers 12-4 the remainder of the gameto register the upset in Charlottesville. Virginia’s Jamie Haas (Berwyn,Pa./Marple Newtown) and Sarah Gercke (Charlottesville,Va./St.Anne’s-Belfield) both scored twice to lead the Cavaliers, but NorthCarolina had eight different people score to send the Heels to the victory.
The Cavaliers won the opening draw and the two teams battled backand forth for the opening minutes before Gercke got an 8-meter andconverted it for the 1-0 lead 4:19 into the contest. North Carolinacountered with their own free position at 22:52, and on a broken Virginiaclear took the lead for good as Amy Havrilla connverted for UNC. GrayMacNair scored at 11:19 to take a 3-1 lead for UNC, forcing the Cavs totake a timeout.
Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) stood her ground in the eight andscooped up the ground ball and started a transition that saw Mills Hook(Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) feed Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./WoodstockUnion) down low to cut the lead to 3-2 at 6:48. But 38 seconds later UNC’sBetsy Gaines pushed the margin back to two. UNC went up 5-2 as Havrillaconverted a fe position, but just over a minute later Haas converted herown 8-meter to keep the Hoos within two at the break. It marked the 26thconsecutive game that Haas has scored, placing her just one back of theall-time record. It also was her 100th career point, moving her to 20thall-time in Cavalier scoring.
Fromal started the second half with a caused turnover and a sprintupfield where she fed a streaking Gercke just 3:19 into the stanza to cutthe deficit to 5-4, but that would be as close as the Cavaliers would get.Carolina scored a pair of goals three minutes apart to take a 7-4 leadbefore Haas worked free in the arc to get back to 7-5, but the Heels closedout with a 5-0 run in the final 14:43 to win 12-5.
With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 6-2 and 0-2 in the ACC whileUNC improves to 6-2 and 2-0 in the conference.
The Cavaliers return to action on Friday, March 31 at Princeton.Game time against the #4 Tigers is 3:00.
